Master your recovery strategy and execution
Unplanned database downtime may be unavoidable, but BMC Recovery for DB2 11 can keep it from ruining your day. Recover from your next outage or data corruption with lightning speed by using this powerful set of recovery tools to:
- Speed up and streamline your backup processes.
- Recover your from a disaster immediately, with no loss of integrity.
- Establish automatic backup and recovery jobs to lessen the impact of disaster.
- Simulate and estimate disaster recovery scenarios to plan for resource needs.
- Reverse damaging changes to your operational data, no matter how they were caused.
Supercharge your backup and recovery procedures
Disaster could strike your databases at any moment. You need backup processes that keep you prepared and recovery procedures you can rely on when that moment arrives. The utilities in the Recovery for DB2 solution cover both, with high-speed, low-impact options for creating data-consistent backups, as well as the ability to automatically build recovery processes to cope with even the most complex applications.
Create backups fast, with no downtime
Use advanced copy features to create complete, data-consistent backups of your data without suspending read/write access.
Tailor backups to your needs
Choose the backup technique that best matches the size of your data—or let the tool autonomously manage the techniques for you, on an object-by-object basis.
Simulate disaster scenarios
Verify the integrity of your disaster recovery processes, check that their resource requirements will be met, and ensure that they will complete in the desired timeframe.
Recover backward, forward, or sideways
When recovering from a disaster, choose whether to back out database changes from its current state, recover forward from a point-in-time copy, or recover into a new table space with online data migration.
Generate SQL from log information
Automatically build the SQL you need to perform recovery tasks using the information in your DB2 logs.
Maintain your data integrity
Perform multi-level checks of your data integrity, validating table spaces, indexes, and column data.
Restart failed batch processes
Improve your data’s integrity and reduce processing time with finer control over batch job restarts.
Get the most out of your backups
Put your backups to good use, not just for ensuring recoverability but for other database tasks, such as data migration between DB2 subsystems.
Automate common backup and recovery tasks
Build optimized backup and recovery job streams to run for specified groups of database objects.
Deliver near-continuous availability
- Keep comprehensive, easy-to-recover backups without interrupting availability.
- Simplify the recovery process so you can get up and running again in record time.
- Reduce the risks of disaster with integrity checks, recovery simulations, and resource assessments.
- Ease the burden on your recovery team by automating as many tasks as possible.
“Using BMC Recovery Manager for DB2, we can determine if an object has changed after the last full copy — which means there’s no need to re-copy the extra tables. Overall, we estimate that up to 60 percent of tables are no longer copied.”— Veit Blaeser, Systems Programmer, IDG Read more about IDG’s success with BMC solutions
Products included in this solutionThe Recovery for DB2 solution is made up of the following products, all of which are designed to give you powerful, comprehensive control over your backup and recovery processes.
Recovery Manager for DB2®
Prepare your systems to recover quickly and dependably from any type of disaster or corruption with BMC Recovery Manager for DB2. You’ll cut back on time and resource consumption by identifying objects that have not changed since the last backup or recovery point and excluding them from processing. Recovery Manager allows you to group similar database objects and build optimized backup and recovery job streams to protect them. In addition, you can troubleshoot your database recovery scenarios by running simulations to reduce the errors and inconsistencies you’ll find when performing full recovery tests. Recovery Manager for DB2 will gather all the information you need from your local site to build a comprehensive job that can be executed at the recovery site.

Recover Plus for DB2®
Take advantage of three options for high-speed recovery with BMC Recover Plus for DB2. With advanced recovery features, Recover Plus for DB2 lets you choose the right approach for the job. With the backout recovery option, you can start from the current state of your database and back out erroneous updates until you reach your desired point. Alternatively, you can use the forward recovery function to restore an earlier point-in-time copy and apply updates from there. Finally, you have the option to use image copies and log records to recover over into a new table space and translate the object IDs. In addition, unlike traditional recovery methods, Recover Plus for DB2 allows you to recover dropped objects automatically.
Copy Plus for DB2®
Simplify and speed your backup jobs with BMC Copy Plus for DB2, a replacement for the native DB2 copy utility. With options for compression and encryption, as well as the ability to write copies simultaneously to tape and DASD, Copy Plus for DB2 makes the backup process faster and more dependable. Copy Plus will copy related data sets automatically and can quiesce groups of related table spaces to support application recovery, if needed. The utility also automatically updates DB2 catalog information, without the need to execute RUNSTATS separately.
NGT Check for DB2®
Ensure the consistency of your DB2 data using the range of integrity checking features offered by BMC Next Generation Technology Check for DB2. Ranging from structural checks for your table spaces and indexes to detailed referential integrity checks on column data, NGT Check for DB2 provides a faster, more powerful alternative to the native DB2 utilities. With BMC, running integrity checks won’t interfere with database availability.
Log Master for DB2®
Leverage your log information to automatically generate SQL for critical recovery tasks using BMC Log Master for DB2. Let this utility do your work for you, when it comes to building the SQL jobs necessary to undo, redo, or migrate changes after a disaster. Log Master for DB2 will take the hassle out of batch migration jobs, drop recovery, and database audits.

Application Restart Control
Eliminate the risk of restart errors with BMC Application Restart Control—available for DB2, IMS, and VSAM. This utility automates checkpoint creation and tracking, ensuring that you’ll always restart from a reliable point of consistency. Save significant time and CPU consumption with an external filter that scales back excessive checkpoint activity. With Application Restart Control, you’ll be able to reduce—or even eliminate—batch rerun time, while keeping all your data repositories in sync. Quiesce jobs quickly just before a scheduled outage by ending them at a checkpoint, and rely on those same checkpoints for fast, easy recovery from unplanned outages. With minimal implementation requirements and support for a variety of programming languages, Application Restart Control allows you to perform restarts painlessly and efficiently.
