Installation System and ESD Downloads Frequently Asked Questions
About the Installation System
-
What is the Installation System?
The Installation System combines the best of many installation processes into a single, secure, reliable, yet flexible process for installing BMC Software products for OS/390 and z/OS. You can choose either of the following installation methods:
- Express installation
- Custom installation
The Installation System does not support CPO and SMP/E product tapes that were created before the Installation System.
You can find out more about the installation methods here.
-
Why did BMC Software create the Installation System?
BMC Software created this new Installation System to ensure that you can easily and quickly install key solutions for z/OS and gain quicker access to the critical metrics that you rely on to assure application availability.
-
How does the Installation System benefit you?
You can use the Installation System to choose the installation method that fits best with your environment. The Installation System provides an easy-to-use common installation and customization method so that key IT personnel can concentrate their efforts on addressing key business issues. You can install multiple BMC Software products in one simple procedure.
-
Which installation method is the right one?
You should choose the installation method that meets your requirements:
Express installation
Use Express installation for a rapid installation into a new set of product libraries.
Do not use Express installation if you are installing one or more products or solutions into an existing set of product libraries.
Custom installation
Use Custom installation if you are installing one or more products or solutions into an existing set of product libraries.
Do not use Custom installation if you want a rapid installation into a new set of product libraries.
-
Will all BMC Software products and solutions use the Installation System?
Yes, but implementation will be accomplished in phases. View the supported products list.
-
Will all BMC Software products and solutions that use the Installation System require passwords?
Yes, except for MAINVIEW Explorer, RxD2/FlexTools, and RxD2/Link.
-
When are passwords required?
Passwords are required for running BMC Software products and solutions, but not for installing them.
-
What is the overall BMC Software implementation strategy?
The following changes are planned:
- All BMC Software products and solutions for OS/390 and z/OS will be installed by using this new system.
- All BMC Software products and solutions will be available for download from the Web.
- All BMC Software products and solutions are converting to SMP/E, and they will continue to support a Standard installation and an SMP/E installation.
-
My shipment has a B-series installation tape and product tapes. Which tape do I use to start downloading files?
The B-series tape contains the Installation System. The system can be used to install a single tape set, to install multiple tape sets, or to access files on the BMC Software ESD site.
-
My terminal is set for my own country. Will I get errors when performing an install?
If you are using a terminal type that is set to use the alphabet for your country, or if you use a translation table, you will get error messages, especially when trying to go past the Select Products panel BMIPC1A during installation.
Determine if you are using usermods that will translate BMC installation code to your country's language. The recommended terminal type is 3278.
