Following our paradigm-shifting webinar titled “Unlocking Business Value with Modern DataOps,” we’re excited to reflect on these transformative discussions and the enthusiastic participation of our audience.

Guided by BMC’s very own experts, Ron Coleman and John Barry from the BMC AMI Data product management team, this session was a deep dive into reinventing how organizations handle data management, aligning it with the objectives of becoming an Autonomous Digital Enterprise.

One of the main themes of our webinar was the reimagining of databases not just as assets to be maintained, but also as pivotal elements in a broader, strategic context. We shared insights into how BMC AMI Data is a leader within this movement, providing innovative solutions that transform traditional data management into a modern, progressive DataOps framework.

For the database administrator (DBA), we addressed these all too familiar traditional data management challenges:

  • Data maintenance overload—Constantly maintaining and managing databases can be overwhelming, taking up a significant portion of your day.
  • Reactive—When you’re always “fighting fires,” the best monitor is the phone, or you’re learning of issues through external social channels like X (formerly Twitter)!
  • Application performance challenges—Ensuring that applications run smoothly and at peak performance means ensuring that they databases they depend on do so as well.

For the developer, we addressed common challenges such as:

  • Data accessibility—Data silos can impede quick access to data, slowing down the development process, creating bottlenecks, and causing deployment delays.
  • Integration complexity—Integrating data management into a DevOps workflow can be complex and time-consuming—or seemingly impossible.
  • Quality and speed—Inefficient data management practices or poor-performing SQL can prevent developers from delivering high-quality software quickly.

In the end, the audience left with key takeaways addressing the many challenges that DBAs, developers, and management all face:

Beyond maintenance:

We challenged the traditional view of databases and introduced a new paradigm where data management is a critical player in achieving business outcomes.

DigitalOps transformation pillars:

We elaborated on the three pillars—resiliency, agility, and observability—that are essential for a successful digital transformation, offering tactics to dismantle silos and ensure optimal application performance.

DevOps integration:

Practical strategies were shared for incorporating DevOps into data management workflows, spotlighting specialized solutions such as BMC AMI SQL Performance for Db2® and BMC AMI DevOps for Db2®. These tools are designed to accelerate time-to-market and elevate the quality of software deliverables.

The webinar offered thought leadership as well as a call to action for DBAs, developers, and business leaders to embrace new approaches that promise to deliver enhanced business value. We delved into how the limitations of inward-focused data management can be overcome by adopting an application-centric, outward-looking DataOps approach.

Most importantly, the strategies discussed aim to alleviate maintenance burdens, enhance data accessibility, and efficiently support high-quality software delivery.

For instance, BMC AMI Database Administration for Db2® can automatically capture and propagate database changes across IBM® Db2® environments while enforcing DevOps best practices with BMC AMI DevOps for Db2®. You can also:

In today’s digital landscape, organizations are increasingly realizing the importance of integrating mainframe databases with DevOps practices. By overcoming the bottlenecks associated with mainframe database changes, organizations can achieve greater agility, reliability, and efficiency across their applications. This blog post explores the challenges faced by organizations, the growing interest in database DevOps, and the significant benefits it brings to businesses.

The mainframe database bottleneck

Traditional mainframe database changes are not keeping pace with the speed of DevOps, negatively impacting deployment times. A recent IDC survey on database DevOps, commissioned by BMC, shows that a significant percentage of organizations deploy mainframe test database schema changes monthly or even less frequently. Moreover, the lead time for production database changes can be two weeks or more, and a considerable number of organizations roll back multiple deployed database changes every year.

Limited DBA resources

A key cause of bottlenecks in the process is the limited availability of database administrators (DBAs), who are often shared resources. The delay in reviewing SQL and Data Language/I (DL/I) calls and schema and database changes leads to prolonged waiting times for developers. The aforementioned IDC survey showed that a staggering 90.5 percent of application developers lack self-service tools for database services, with over 60 percent waiting at least a week for a DBA to become available. Additionally, around 43.6 percent of DBAs are shared among multiple application development teams, further exacerbating the resource crunch.

Organizations turn to database DevOps

To address these challenges, organizations are turning to database DevOps solutions. The IDC survey reveals that 87 percent of organizations are either using, piloting/planning, or interested in implementing an automated CI/CD pipeline for mainframe database changes, with a significant number actively piloting or planning to do so in the near term.

A lack of database automation solutions

While the demand for database DevOps is high, many organizations still lack proper automation solutions. According to the survey, only 30 percent of organizations have implemented database automation tools, relying instead on native utilities or in-house developed tools to manage their database change processes.

Business benefits

Despite the challenges, integrating mainframe database changes into an automated CI/CD pipeline brings significant benefits to organizations. It should be noted, that IT executives have the highest value perception inside the organization toward integrating mainframe database changes into an automated CI/CD pipeline. Aside from executive support of the value of this integration, other top drivers for adoption are the desire to maintain database code in source control and improve collaboration. The business benefits realized through this integration include increased team flexibility and agility, improved business efficiency, and enhanced application software quality.

A robust automated solution

BMC AMI DevOps for Db2® revolutionizes the application development process by seamlessly incorporating mainframe database changes into agile workflows. By integrating with application development orchestration tools, such as Jenkins and Microsoft Azure DevOps, BMC AMI DevOps for Db2® automates the capture and communication of database changes to DBAs, while upholding DevOps best practices.

Offering a comprehensive suite of features that harmonize mainframe databases with DevOps methodologies, BMC AMI DevOps for Db2® enables organizations to optimize their development processes while maintaining the integrity and reliability of their databases. Self-service capabilities for application developers empower teams to efficiently manage and implement Db2 schema changes, facilitate effortless communication between application development and DBA teams, and give organizations full transparency and audit trails with user-friendly dashboards.

This powerful solution enables organizations to enhance business agility without compromising database continuity. Application deployment is accelerated, thanks to streamlined processes facilitated by BMC AMI DevOps for Db2®.

Mainframe databases + DevOps + automated CI/CD pipelines

Integrating mainframe databases with DevOps practices through automated CI/CD pipelines is a crucial step for organizations to unlock the full potential of their mainframe investments. By overcoming the bottlenecks associated with mainframe database changes and embracing database DevOps, organizations can accelerate their development processes, improve collaboration, and deliver higher-quality applications. As the demand for database automation solutions grows, organizations must prioritize modernizing their mainframe database tools and processes to stay competitive in the fast-paced digital landscape.

IDUG (International Db2 Users Group), an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides education, services, and conferences, all based on the IBM® Db2® database, recently held the 2023 IDUG NA Db2 Tech Conference in Philadelphia, PA. BMC was pleased to be a gold sponsor for the event, with many BMC team members participating in or presenting seven individual sessions.

Per Ron Coleman, advisory IDUG board member and director of product management for BMC Automated Mainframe Intelligence (AMI), “We had a great experience at the conference, and we look forward to continuing the conversations we started centered around best practices and solutions for optimizing and automating for peak performance.”

BMC Presentations at IDUG NA Conference

In case you missed any of the presentations, they are available via the IDUG site here (registration required), and several of BMC’s IDUG presentations will be made available on demand.

Here are a few highlights:

Anne Hoelscher and David Schipper presented “Let’s See Db2! Observability With BMC AMI Data—Turning All That Noise Into Action,” where they discussed the barrage of stats and metrics that teams deal with on a daily basis, and how too much of a good thing can easily turn into overwhelming noise. They also explained how BMC AMI Data can help you take control and turn all that noise into actionable insights.

Anne explains, “Our BMC AMI Apptune for Db2®, part of BMC AMI SQL Performance for Db2®, and BMC AMI Reorg for Db2®, part of BMC AMI Database Performance for Db2® integration, make it possible for DBAs to implement best practices across their data management and create actionable events from the performance data collected by BMC products.” You can learn more about this integration here.

Dave adds, “BMC AMI Change Manager for Db2®, part of the BMC AMI Database Administration for Db2® solution, provides usage data to BMC AMI zAdviser. BMC AMI zAdviser analyses and correlates this information to provide management-level visibility dashboards that enable DBAs and management to understand database and product usage activity and identify areas for efficiency improvements.” You can learn more about this integration here and watch this video.

Todd Mollenhauer and Chad Reiber presented “From Recovery to Database Change Management—Shift-Left DBA and Developer Collaboration for Data-Driven DevOps Efficiencies.” This session covered ransomware, and how organizations face two demanding questions: Is our data recoverable? How long will it take? By shifting both the recovery process and database change management left, DBAs and developers can use the same recovery solutions and change processes in both development environments and production environments and validate the install and back out process during development.

Per Todd, “Development pipelines continue at full speed despite [IBM®] Db2® z/OS® schema changes. BMC brings the full power of BMC AMI Change Manager for Db2® to automate this complicated process. Integration with current orchestration software makes it a seamless process for developers, supporting the goal of rapid code deployment.”

Chad adds, “Everyone is moving data. The five techniques presented in this session featured an all-star team of BMC AMI Db2® products to increase availability, provide consistent data, and reduce machine costs. Your current processes are not broken, but perhaps you can fix them with process improvement using these products and solutions.”
