Blue Skies Ahead For Clients Considering The Leap To Cloud On Z

Cloud use is widespread in most IT organizations today. AWS, Google, Microsoft and other companies offer options for hosting and running x86 environments but these providers don’t have options for clients running workloads on IBM’s z/OS® operating system or mainframe platform. If your organization is exploring ways to achieve cloud benefits in your mainframe environment, you might feel like there aren’t many options. Luckily, BMC is working with clients just like you around the world on filling this gap.

Is your organization interested in shifting from CapEx to OpEx? Does a hosted environment that improves cost transparency and enables you to benefit from economies of scale sound interesting? Does your organization put value on the security-rich advantages of the most trusted platform on the planet?

Have you run the numbers and determined that moving off the platform is too expensive, too risky, and provides too little benefit? Are you finding it challenging to address upcoming retirements across your mainframe workforce?

If you answered yes to most of those questions, then you might be evaluating your options to partner with an external third-party provider to leverage their mainframe cloud environment.

There are steps you can, and should, take to minimize your costs before moving to a mainframe cloud alternative. Arm your team with the tools to execute an “R4 B4” approach—to drive a lower peak R4 (4-hour rolling average usage) before signing up for the move to cloud. This action will reduce your total MLC costs, which consequently establishes a lower baseline of expense as you implement the cloud strategy. This reduces your on-going costs for cloud usage.

Absent an aggressive MLC cost reduction strategy prior to using the cloud, your OpEx expenses for the cloud will be higher, for the entire time you execute on the cloud. Using the right strategy and tools, such as those from BMC, can reduce your MLC—and your overall mainframe costs—while still delivering the services your customers expect.

BMC has partnered with major mainframe cloud providers like IBM, ATOS, and DXC, just to name a few. Our structured partnership agreements deliver clients a frictionless transition to their new cloud environment where they can continue transforming their business on a modern mainframe environment.

Over 100 BMC clients have already moved to various mainframe cloud environments while continuing to use and enjoy the BMC solutions that help them keep their mainframe costs down while keeping their systems, databases and applications up and running at peak performance.
