Storage Space Assessment Using BMC MAINVIEW® Storage Resource Manager Identifies Significant Savings for the BMC Software IT Organization The IT organization at BMC Software is no different from any other IT department - facing challenges such as assuring business continuity with fewer resources, shrinking budgets, and ever-growing systems. The group utilizes many of its own products and services; however, like other companies that have gone through mergers and acquisitions, it has a diverse set of management tools. The BMC Software@BMC Software initiative, which is focused on using company products to manage the BMC environment, has helped BMC Software reduce costs while assuring availability. One of the successes of this initiative was a Storage Space Assessment performed by BMC Professional Services, utilizing the BMC MAINVIEW Storage Resource Manager solution. This assessment identified more than $500,000 savings through deferring future mainframe storage purchases and an additional $1.5 million in potential storage management cost avoidance. Using BMC MAINVIEW Storage Resource Manager will allow BMC Software to effectively manage a growing storage environment without increasing staff. From an operational perspective, understanding storage usage helps IT organizations plan for the future. And with hard data obtained through a storage resource management assessment, planning becomes more effective. IT can avoid some purchases altogether and make better, more well-informed purchasing decisions when additional storage capacity must be acquired. BMC Professional Services has developed and refined a Storage Space Assessment Service with BMC MAINVIEW Storage Resource Manager to identify cost savings by recapturing or optimizing existing storage for the company's R&D Support organization. Data accumulated during the assessment was input into the storage ROI model created by BMC Software and is used by the company to justify the purchase of additional storage. Internally, BMC Software agreed to put the assessment to the test in its own shop. BMC Professional Services performed the assessment on the mainframe side of the house. In analyzing the storage at BMC Software, all aspects of the storage environment were reviewed, including DASD utilization, BMC MAINVIEW Storage Resource Manager usage, and third-party products usage. The assessment resulted in a report identifying hard-dollar savings and areas of costs avoidance, areas for improvement, and recommended Best Practices. In the final analysis, BMC Professional Services identified significant results in the following key areas for the mainframe environment: hard dollar savings (real storage recapture through deferring the purchase of hardware) and cost avoidance related to software savings, personnel costs, and storage management costs.
The management costs in the cost avoidance section were calculated using $3 for every $1 of hardware savings. Many industry analysts recommend using $5 to $7 for storage management costs, so these results are conservative.
