Business Challenge
With shrinking batch windows, companies have less time to run batch jobs. Backing out updates from a batch application can take twice as long as running the application. Therefore, if a failure occurs, it is not practical to back out everything and start from the beginning. Nor is it practical to restart from the wrong point, then back out those errors and start over again.
Business Need
- Achieve uninterrupted, or continuous, availability of applications
- Meet batch schedules
- Deliver and maintain applications with little or no JCL changes
- Leverage existing staff
- Respond to application failures quickly and effectively
Our Solution
BMC APPLICATION RESTART CONTROL (AR/CTL) for IMS provides the ability to resume the processing of failed or interrupted batch applications from the most recent checkpoint, rather than from the beginning of the job step. For organizations that have high availability requirements, faster restarts minimize contention between batch jobs and online processing. The AR/CTL product also helps database administrators determine the best balance between performance, restart time, and checkpoint overhead by controlling the checkpoint frequency outside the application.
Key Features & Benefits
- Minimizes implementation time by ensuring easy retrofit of existing applications
- Ensures data integrity by keeping all data repositories in sync
- Allows you to quickly quiesce jobs just before a scheduled outage by ending them at a checkpoint
- Improves data availability and data integrity by reducing errors
- Maximizes availability by reducing or eliminating batch re-run time
