MAINVIEW® for Linux – Servers

Key Benefits

Business Challenge

In these times of expense pressure, companies are searching for lower-cost alternatives for running business systems. Many companies are evaluating Linux as a less expensive platform to run their business applications. Linux on the zSeries platform not only offers less expensive alternatives, but it also provides attractive technical options.

While Linux on zSeries offers technical and economic benefits, this configuration also introduces additional system management challenges. Imagine the logistic challenges associated with managing an environment with hundreds or thousands of Linux systems running on a single zSeries server. How do you identify Linux systems or specific applications experiencing availability or performance problems—problems that may impact your business? Linux on zSeries is a new environment and it is critical that you have a solid picture of how this new environment is running.

The BMC Software Solution

MAINVIEW for Linux – Servers provides a window to understanding Linux for zSeries performance and availability. This product gives you the ability to not only understand how your Linux systems are performing but also the health of the applications running on Linux. MAINVIEW for Linux – Servers allows you to identify and correct problems before they impact your business.

Not only can you monitor specific Linux systems with MAINVIEW for Linux – Servers, but you can also take a holistic view of your Linux systems. You can see an aggregate view of how all of your Linux systems are running, and then drill-down to a specific Linux system for detailed analysis.

Monitored Areas for a Specific Linux Image

This approach allows the Linux technician to monitor hundreds or even thousands of Linux systems expected to run in a z/VM environment. In addition, you have all the data-management capabilities of MAINVIEW available to you.

This feature, along with many others, allows you to easily monitor a large number of Linux systems.

Monitoring Key Components

MAINVIEW for Linux – Servers is designed to allow you to monitor key components across your Linux systems. Through the EZMENU system, you can quickly navigate to any information in the product. Online Help is also provided for every field and view in the product. Some of the key Linux areas monitored include the following:

The MAINVIEW for Linux – Servers interface is designed so that you can quickly identify systems and/or applications consuming the most resources in real-time. Historical data is also provided for trend analysis. However, you can also quickly drill down to any monitored Linux system to look at specific detail.

MAINVIEW Integration

Since MAINVIEW for Linux – Servers is part of the overall MAINVIEW product family, it can be used with other MAINVIEW products for overall application management. Performance information for an application running both on Linux and z/OS can be integrated into one MAINVIEW display. For example, MAINVIEW for DB2 and MAINVIEW for Linux – Servers can be used to help manage a Linux application issuing DB2 SQL calls using DB2 Connect to request data from DB2 running on z/OS. BMC Software is the only vendor that can provide this level of integration across the zSeries platform.

The MAINVIEW solution from BMC Software is a reliable integrated set of products that gives you complete control of your enterprise server. With MAINVIEW at work in your enterprise, your data center operates more efficiently and manages application service levels from a business perspective. Many problems are detected and solved automatically, and troubleshooting is easier and faster than ever.
