Large DB2 archive logs require many tapes, making it difficult to access data for recovery. Mounting multiple tapes during a recovery is time-consuming and costly. Many logs contain records that are not needed for recovery, such as index-related log records and log data for user-specified objects. If you are going to assure that your data is recoverable at all times and manage costs, you must have answers to these questions:

The PACLOG product from BMC Software gives you substantial archive log media savings so that more archive log data can be stored on DASD, making the data more accessible for recovery. In addition, this eliminates:

PACLOG uses a patented filtering process and Extended Compression Architecture® (XCA®) to achieve up to 95% reduction in the size of DB2 archive logs and offers improved filtering rates. A new filtering option feature allows a listing of index spaces that needs to be kept. This new feature allows index recovery.

To reduce the amount of tapes stored for archive logs, PACLOG allows you to stack multiple archive log data sets to a single tape. And logs processed by PACLOG can reduce network transmission times in support of disaster recovery.

Included with the product is a modeling tool that helps you determine the optimum number and size of active logs for your system if you add PACLOG to your tool set.

With PACLOG, you have a choice of filtering options that allow you to effectively eliminate archive log records not needed for recovery.

These might include index-related log records and log data for user-specified objects. This patented process is an exclusive feature found only in PACLOG.

When filtering is combined with BMC Software’s Extended Compression Architecture (XCA) technology, significant reduction in the size of the archive log can be achieved – up to 95%.

Presently you may be taking Archive 2 to a recovery site, leaving you vulnerable at the local site, with only a single point of failure there. PACLOG eliminates this problem by allowing you to make up to four copies of the original archive logs; two for local site use and two for recovery site use.

In addition, you have the option of specifying filtering and compression options separately for each copy. And all copies are automatically cataloged.

You can archive copies to tape or DASD. The media for each archive log copy can be specified separately and copies can be stacked to tape. This flexibility allows you to keep a variety of archive log data sets on multiple media devices.

The PACLOG product’s modeling tool is an interactive spreadsheet that analyzes your current DB2 logging environment so you can evaluate alternative logging choices. For example, you can evaluate your access to log data by determining how many hours you want your log to be available on DASD and how long your log data is recorded in your bootstrap data set (BSDS).

The modeling tool can also calculate the optimum size and number of active logs.

PACLOG reports on archive logs that are no longer usable by DB2 and logs that have been processed. This allows easier management of these data sets, saving valuable DASD and tape storage.
