Overview
BMC Software's Fast Path solutions include two products that help IMS database administrators accomplish quick recoveries of Fast Path databases and faster cold starts of IMS after a system failure. Delivering absolute data integrity and the fastest return to application availability for business-critical IMS Fast Path databases, these solutions also minimize manual intervention by the database administrator.
Fast Path Recovery Utility
If an emergency restart of an IMS system fails, several manual recovery steps must be undertaken to ensure the integrity of Fast Path databases prior to a cold start. Depending on several factors including the number of databases and areas to be recovered and the volume of log dataset records to be processed, these recoveries can require many hours to implement using native IMS.
BMC Software's Fast Path Recovery Utility product provides a very fast method of recovering all DEDBs with complete integrity prior to an IMS cold start. Fast Path Recovery Utility can also interface with IBM's® MSDB Recovery Utility. Consequently, the cold start can be performed much quicker to restore application service to users.
Fast Path Recovery Utility effectively reduces the time required from hours to only a few minutes.
Fast Path Recovery Utility automatically selects and acquires all information and resources needed for successful recovery, performs the recovery functions, and produces a set of comprehensive audit trail reports. In addition, it also provides an override capability so you can specify the recovery control information such as the checkpoint ID and the log data sets to be used for the recovery process. To further facilitate Fast Path recoveries, Fast Path Recovery Utility:
- Fully supports multiple area data sets (up to seven copies of an area data set)
- Provides block-level sharing support
- Requires no source code modifications to any user or IMS program or control block
- Provides a list of UOR for external subsystems (i.e., DB2®, MQSeries)
Fast Path Restart Control Facility
The way in which an IMS system is restarted can directly affect the integrity of the IMS databases. This is especially true when the previous IMS session is abnormally terminated and when MSDBs are used within IMS Fast Path.
BMC Software's Fast Path Restart Control Facility product provides a comprehensive, automated mechanism that ensures the integrity of IMS databases and critical system data sets during the restart of an IMS control region. It provides numerous benefits, including:
- Enables rapid IMS restarts with complete integrity
- Minimizes downtime after an IMS system failure
- Eliminates potential errors by reducing the number and complexity of decisions required during IMS restarts
- Automatically determines IMS system resource and database status and dynamically allocates required data sets
