Business challenge
With the increasing growth in traffic on a 3270 terminal network, terminal response time has become increasingly important. Slowed or erratic response times on overloaded networks decrease user productivity, increase the cost of work, and compromise quality.
The BMC Software solution
ULTRAOPT increases network throughput, speeds response times, and reduces the need for additional communications hardware by significantly reducing the size of inbound and outbound data streams for most VTAM-based communications subsystems and session managers.
ULTRAOPT is the ultimate data stream optimization solution. Operating transparently to users, it eliminates the need to install and maintain optimization products in each application, which can result in reduced personnel time and less CPU overhead.
Maximize existing investments
Optimizing data transmission with ULTRAOPT means your existing hardware investments are maximized.
ULTRAOPT:
- Allows additional users to be added to existing lines by reducing traffic on those lines
- Reduces costs associated with modems, cluster and communication controllers, public packet switched networks, and satellite transmissions
- Decreases the load on the telecommunications access method, cutting buffer space requirements, CPU time, and storage used
- Supports all IBM®-supported versions of OS/390 and z/OS
- Works with the MAINVIEW® for VTAM product from BMC Software to deliver maximum flexibility at minimum cost to maximize its enterprise value
The Bypass Send and Receive feature allows you to shorten the long path lengths of session managers by eliminating the SENDs and RECEIVEs between applications.
Optimize network traffic
ULTRAOPT optimizes subsystems such as CICS and IMS as well as applications such as TSO, TN3270, and 3270 print distribution. By simultaneously optimizing access to all VTAM applications, ULTRAOPT can play a key role in data center operations.
ULTRAOPT can be customized to optimize only specified applications, with only the techniques of optimization appropriate for that application. User exits allow installation-specific special handling of specific LUs or applications.
Monitor response time
The Response Time Monitoring (RTM) feature displays real-time response times for LU2 sessions it intercepts. It calculates and displays
RTM allows you to display real-time statistics on response times by application or terminal. You can also create an “include/exclude” table to specify the applications or terminals to be monitored. RTM enables you to pinpoint causes of response time problems, balance application workloads across servers, troubleshoot application bottlenecks or network latency problems, and justify additional bandwidth.
Improve session manager performance
ULTRAOPT uses the Bypass Send and Receive (BSR) function to improve session manager performance for intercepted application-to-application sessions in the same host. BSR is an interface between the session manager and all optimized VTAM applications that allows the session to bypass VTAM for SENDs and RECEIVEs between a session manager and a target VTAM application. By using this function, you can improve response time and reduce CPU use.
Reach your optimization goals
ULTRAOPT lightens the load on telecommunications software and enables you to get more from existing hardware. It helps reduces the cost of future additions to your network. You can improve terminal operator productivity and customer satisfaction.
