> Add secondary space allocation when needed but not originally requested, based on percentage of primary space available

> Reduce primary space allocation by a user-defined percentage, if OS/390 or z/OS cannot find space

> Reduce secondary space allocation

> Increase secondary space allocation after a user-specified extent limit is reached

> Add a volume if extent limit for a volume is reached or extents are unavailable on the volume

> Rename, delete, or uncatalog old versions, to prevent I/O errors and access of invalid data by allowing OS/390 or z/OS to catalog the current version

> Initialize empty data sets that are allocated at step end and release unused space, enabling DFSMShsm to recognize and migrate the data set

> Optimize block size by overriding block sizes of new allocations to improve space usage and performance or by allowing device independence

> Redirect allocations to VIO for temporary data sets with the option to limit use to data sets of specified size, automatically releasing unused space when a data set closes

DFSMS features

BMC MAINVIEW SRM Allocation enhances DFSMS by providing:

> Information necessary to position the environment for DFSMS, such as changing a data set’s pool or storage group or forcing a migration.

> Control statement generation. This eliminates one of the manual steps in DFSMS implementation and management. Control statements drive corrective action for problems that occur when classes or groups are changed (before or after DFSMS).

> Synchronization reports that allow you to identify data sets that have different assignments than would occur based on current DFSMS policies.

> An easy-to-use alternative to the ACS language for assigning SMS constructs. This can be used in conjunction with, or as a complete replacement for, ACS routines. Construct assignments can be based on user-defined variables, filter and rule lists, and name-masking capabilities.

> The ability to test new or modified ACS code—in a production environment—without using complicated ISMF scenarios.

DFSMS implementation

In a non-DFSMS environment, BMC MAINVIEW SRM provides all the benefits of DFSMS implementation.

BMC MAINVIEW SRM Allocation delivers efficient pooling, intelligent allocation, and standards control to optimize performance and space use for all types of data sets. BMC MAINVIEW SRM Allocation works with DFSMS to provide a granularity of control not possible with DFSMS alone.

BMC MAINVIEW SRM Allocation helps you implement DFSMS or extend your implementation. Pooling strategies can be easily applied SMS and non-SMS volumes to bring more data sets into a consistent storage management strategy. BMC MAINVIEW SRM Allocation can create subpools within SMS groups.

Intelligent allocation control

DFSMS supplies minimal accounting for actual device performance or volume space use when placing a data set. With DFSMS, there is no attempt to balance the load, improve DASD use, or ensure that performance requirements are met. BMC MAINVIEW SRM Allocation extends DFSMS functionality by selecting eligible volumes based on best fit, contiguous space, percent space available, and real-time and historical performance.

BMC MAINVIEW SRM Allocation can avoid volumes that have exceeded a threshold. You can apply the same type of threshold control available with DFSMS to non-SMS managed data.

BMC MAINVIEW SRM Allocation considers RAID device-type in volume selection, so data sets can be automatically directed to the most appropriate device. BMC MAINVIEW SRM Allocation uses the physical to logical volume mapping information obtained by BMC MAINVIEW SRM Reporting from the storage arrays to allocate user-specified data sets to separate physical volumes.

Standards enforcement

BMC MAINVIEW SRM Allocation enables you to set limits on allocation requests, providing both monitoring and enforcement capabilities. It also ensures that:

> Block size is optimized

> Expiration dates are appropriate

> Renamed data sets that require a change in management class are identified

> Allocation requests are within guidelines

> New data sets are cataloged

> VSAM parameters and qualifiers conform to standards

Tape management

The lack of effective space management of tape volumes has contributed to the tremendous number of tapes and tape devices required by most shops. BMC MAINVIEW SRM Allocation enhances tape management by deferring tape mounts from allocation time to open and splitting the unit affinity specifications across separate STK SILO devices based on the actual tape location, eliminating the need to enter or remove volumes.

BMC MAINVIEW SRM Allocation associated specific applications with the physical and logical storage assets that support them. It ensures proper allocation of critical application data sets, regardless of whether they are SMS-managed. BMC MAINVIEW SRM Allocation ensures that jobs complete successfully the first time they are run.
