Business challenge
Your critical business applications are constantly changing. The database structures that support your changing applications undergo a tremendous amount of insert, update, and delete activity. Over time, DB2 objects tend to become disorganized, affecting application performance and availability.
REORG PLUS for DB2
REORG PLUS for DB2 is a powerful utility that reorganizes your DB2 data and provides advanced technology and additional features that are not found in other similar tools or native DB2 utilities.
Increases application availability and concurrency
There are many challenges today placed on applications and the data and structures that support those applications. As users depend more on DB2 for e-business applications, the need for continuous operation becomes critical.
To allow application access to your DB2 objects during reorganization, you can specify an option in REORG PLUS for DB2 to allow read/write access to DB2 tablespaces and index spaces during processing. REORG PLUS for DB2 also automatically calculates the correct amount of memory required to process on-line reorganizations to provide dynamic scalability.
REORG PLUS for DB2 provides additional flexibility and scalability in your environment by allowing you to programatically alter the size of your DB2 VSAM objects while the data is being reorganized. You can re-size the structures that hold the data to scale to your needs and make better use of costly disk resources.
REORG PLUS for DB2 performs reorganizations without affecting high-transaction CRM and ERM applications such as SAP R/3. You have more control over drain processing, which allows you to determine the concurrency levels to suit your application availability needs.
Nondisruptive on-line processing
REORG PLUS for DB2 was designed to improve performance of your critical DB2 applications and to provide nondisruptive access to objects.
Allowing access to applications during reorganization is not enough to achieve true nondisruptive processing. If the reorganization process competes with the application for database resources, you might experience degradation in DB2 performance. REORG PLUS for DB2 avoids this situation by providing several distinctive advantages over other similar tools or native DB2 utilities:
- REORG PLUS for DB2 does not use DB2 resources such as the DB2 buffer pool, the buffer pool manager, or work databases.
- REORG PLUS for DB2 allocates work files and staging copies of the DB2 objects and virtual storage as needed. This reduction of DASD resources and use of virtual storage eliminates the use of DB2 resources during reorganization.
- For DB2 Version 6 or later, REORG PLUS for DB2 rebalances partitions during an on-line tablespace reorganization without incurring an outage.
- REORG PLUS for DB2 does not treat the RID map as a DB2 object during reorganization. This prevents the RID map from interfering with the reorganization process.
By eliminating contention between the application and REORG PLUS for DB2 utility, reorganization can occur in a nondisruptive manner.
No more QUIESCE
To achieve even greater availability of your business-critical DB2 applications, REORG PLUS for DB2 no longer requires a QUIESCE when performing reorganizations of DB2 objects. This significantly reduces the processing time of both SHRLEVEL REFERENCE and SHRLEVEL CHANGE reorganizations. For example, REORG PLUS for DB2 no longer requires a QUIESCE when performing an on-line reorganization on an index. This feature allows full availability of the tablespace and all related indexes.
Achieving maximum performance
REORG PLUS for DB2 uses advanced technology to provide significant performance advantages:
- REORG PLUS for DB2 can exploit advanced hardware configurations that support multiple processors. It uses parallel processing to shorten elapsed times and improve availability. Concurrent execution of several tasks such as the sort/build and reload phases further reduces the elapsed processing time. Advanced multi-tasking options let you reduce the elapsed time for I/O bound processes and let you customize multi-tasking activities to your environment.
- You can scale reorganization tasks based on your resources. REORG PLUS for DB2 can exploit your available resources by automatically detecting the addition of new processors.
- REORG PLUS for DB2 includes an exclusive internal sort engine that significantly increases the speed of the sort phase during processing.
- During I/O processing, large amounts of data are read and written. To maximize I/O performance, REORG PLUS for DB2 manages all buffering and performs I/O operations at the lowest level possible. This allows reading and writing of several blocks of data with each I/O operation and allows REORG PLUS to perform prefetching of I/O.
- REORG PLUS for DB2 runs outside of the scope of DB2 and does not compete with applications for DB2 resources. This unique capability reduces the overall elapsed processing time of execution and uses less CPU cycles than the native DB2 REORG utility.
Database Performance for DB2 solution
REORG PLUS for DB2 is available as a standalone product or as a component in the Database Performance for DB2 solution. The Database Performance for DB2 solution lets you actively manage your DB2 objects, maximizing availability and performance of these critical application components.
