BMC Software solution

A product is needed that can satisfy all levels of DB2 users. That product is the BMC CATALOG MANAGER for DB2 product. Novice users benefit from CATALOG MANAGER because they can use its menus and lists to navigate through the DB2 catalog. Experienced database administrators (DBAs) benefit because they can use a single tool to perform a multitude of functions.

Increases productivity and accuracy

CATALOG MANAGER provides interactive access to catalog information through menus, dialogs and online help. But locating the information in the DB2 catalog is only the first step. CATALOG MANAGER automates many of the administrative functions by allowing you to invoke utilities, and execute data definition language (DDL), data control language (DCL), data manipulation language (DML), and DB2 commands directly from CATALOG MANAGER lists.

You no longer have to remember SQL syntax or code JCL. CATALOG MANAGER does it for you. And because it is automated, it is accurate. You no longer have to locate every dependency or plan affected by a change. CATALOG MANAGER finds and displays this kind of information. CATALOG MANAGER allows you to easily:

> create and drop DB2 objects

> grant, revoke or copy authorizations

> convert or manage plans, packages or DBRMs

> perform BIND, REBIND and FREE functions

> build and issue DB2 commands

> execute BMC Software or IBM DB2 utilities

Reduces learning curve and costs

CATALOG MANAGER facilitates navigation through the DB2 catalog. It highlights information on relationships, dependencies and the hierarchy of DB2 objects. CATALOG MANAGER reduces development costs by:

> processing SQL statements, DB2 commands, DSN commands, and BMC Software and IBM utilities directly from generated lists

> eliminating the need to know SQL syntax, thereby decreasing the DB2 learning curve and increasing productivity of new developers and allowing experienced DBAs and developers to perform many tasks quickly

> cloning existing objects for use as test objects

> providing advanced utility processing, which lets you specify and execute up to eight utilities against one or more objects

> providing combined lists; for example, when your DB2 environment contains ERP applications with large numbers of objects, CATALOG MANAGER gives you the ability to combine a table space list and a package list in order to view all packages in the listed table spaces

Stores utility preferences

CATALOG MANAGER allows you to store utility preferences in a profile. A utility profile is a file that contains customized specifications. Using utility profiles saves time and helps avoid user errors because you avoid having to specify the utility syntax each time you generate a job. There are two kinds of profiles:

> site profile, which is available to all users

> user profile, which is available to the user who creates it

Integrates a table editor

DBAs and application developers can easily create, edit and browse DB2 tables and views using the integrated table editor in CATALOG MANAGER. Users can mark and move, delete, copy or repeat, undo and select single or multiple rows. Users familiar with ISPF editing will find the table editor intuitive and easy to use. Added security features allow the DBA to control who has the ability to use the table editor.

Eases security burden

CATALOG MANAGER streamlines security administration. It is 100% compatible with DB2 security mechanisms, offering only safe and secure shortcuts. CATALOG MANAGER eases the security burden by:

> automating the grant and revoke process with fill-in-the-blank panels

> determining the effects of a REVOKE and optionally reassigning authorizations from one user to another

> copying authorizations from one object to another or from one user to another

Develops an audit trail

CATALOG MANAGER creates an automatic audit trail for all catalog-based actions through three types of logs: audit, drop-recovery and session.

The audit log satisfies many corporate audit requirements by identifying who executed a DDL function, when it was executed and on what object. The drop recovery log offers added security by providing the ability to easily recover dropped objects and data. The session log lists all command executions by user and session. This serves as a training aid by eliminating the need to write out step-by-step procedures.

Provides DB2 version 8 support

CATALOG MANAGER provides support for DB2 for z/OS version 8. Support includes, but is not limited to the following:

> Greater than 254 partitions

> Variable CI size

> Nonpadded indexes

> Unicode data

> Longer SQL statements

> Online schema (OLS) changes

> Long object names

> Materialized Query Tables (MQTs)

> Table-controlled partitioning

> Data-partitioned secondary indexes (DPSIs)

BMC Database Administration for DB2 solution and BMC Administrative Assistant for DB2 solution

CATALOG MANAGER is available as a standalone product or as a component in the BMC Database Administration for DB2 solution and the BMC Administrative Assistant for DB2 solution.

The Database Administration solution provides effective and timely management of growth and change in an increasingly complex database environment.

The Administrative Assistant solution helps users of varying experience quickly navigate through the DB2 catalog.

Neither getting started nor staying productive in an IBM DB2 Universal Database for z/OS environment is an easy task. There is a lot to learn and a lot to do. You need to understand the DB2 catalog and directory, manage DB2 objects, execute SQL, create utility jobs, and perform security administration.
