Customer Success: Harris Corporation's Trusted Enterprise Cloud Sets New Industry Benchmark with BMC Software

HOUSTON, August 16, 2011 – Harris Corporation, (NYSE: HRS), an international communications and information technology company, uses BMC Software’s (NASDAQ: BMC) Cloud Lifecycle Management  running on the Cisco Unified Computing System solution to provide business-ready cloud environments that are secure and reliable.

Harris has decades of experience building and operating mission critical networked solutions for government and commercial enterprises. Its Trusted Enterprise Cloud is a world-class cloud system that has been engineered from the ground up to deliver the highest levels of availability, security and operational excellence and is the only cloud service with Harris’ patented trust enablement technology. As part of this technology platform, Harris uses the BMC Cloud solution to support deployment and management of cloud environments from request to retirement.

“We are setting a new benchmark for delivering trust in the cloud based on end-to-end integration, sophisticated supply chain management, pervasive monitoring, and the world’s largest database of software options,” said Wyatt Starnes, vice president of advanced concepts at Harris Corp. “As we looked at solutions for managing the lifecycle of the cloud, it was clear that BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management running on Cisco UCS was the most flexible and most mature offering on the market.”

Using  BMC Cloud Management and Cisco Integrated Cloud Delivery Platform solutions, Harris can accelerate provisioning, optimize ongoing operations and provide continuous regulatory, operational and security compliance. Harris integrated the BMC cloud solution with its own patented trust enablement technologies and other leading IT management software including parts of BMC’s Business Service Management (BSM) platform. Harris’ Trusted Enterprise Cloud leverages Cisco's Unified Service Delivery solution combined with BMC's Cloud Management’s capabilities to deliver breakthroughs in efficiency, time-to-market, service quality, reduced complexity and improved compliance.

“Harris understands that cloud services need to be delivered quickly with a high degree of security to meet our customers’ challenges in today’s dynamic environment,” said Bob Gault, vice president, Global Strategic Partner Organization at Cisco. “Together with BMC, we’ve been able to create a single integrated cloud solution that creates IT efficiency, increases time-to-market, reduces complexity and maintains high service quality and compliance for Harris and their customers.”

BMC’s integrated platform, depth of IT service management and cloud experience and maturity of its products led Harris to choose BMC as its cloud partner.

The BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management solution’s multi-tenancy capabilities enable Harris to achieve economies of scale and deliver superior value.

“The traditional data center is the equivalent of cyber single-family housing, whereas the cloud is more like cyber condominiums,” Starnes said. “When you’re supporting multiple enterprise tenants in a single environment as we are, you have to keep all the environments separate from each other to protect sensitive and confidential systems. BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management in conjunction with our own patented trust enablement technology allows us to do a superior job in that area.”

Harris has found strategic value in BMC’s service blueprints within BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management, which enable the company to deliver a range of controlled, configurable cloud services to their customers from a service catalog. Harris maintains high standards for supply chain management at every level of its cloud stack.

“BMC’s concept of establishing structured service blueprints and adhering to those controls aligns with our bill-of-materials best practices,” Starnes said. “And BMC’s support for heterogeneity means that the BMC solutions integrate easily into our multi-vendor environment and with our own service model.”

As a service provider, Harris must address the compliance needs of diverse clients in many industries. Harris’ Trusted Enterprise Cloud was engineered to comply with commercial and government regulatory frameworks such as the Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) Act, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard. BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management and BMC Server Automation solutions ensure compliance by detecting impending issues or unauthorized changes.

“Some organizations treat compliance as an activity you do periodically — maybe quarterly or annually,” Starnes said. “We view it as something you do all the time, not as an extra step. Compliance reports can be generated on demand because the system is continuously monitored and the data collected. We know when a system deviates from standards, and we can remediate right away. That keeps performance high and reduces the risk of outages.”

Harris also leverages the BMC Atrium CMDB to capture and store information on IT infrastructure components and their interrelationships.

To control change management – a critical part of delivering successful and trusted services – Harris’ Trusted Enterprise Cloud environment includes components of the BMC Remedy IT Service Management Suite. The BMC Remedy suite’s change management capabilities enable Harris to plan and implement changes to minimize downtime.

Harris also relied on BMC Consulting Services to assist with implementation of the solutions. “BMC Consulting Services worked side by side with Harris to create an enterprise-class cloud system that enables Harris to deliver a truly differentiated cloud service,” said Starnes.

Working with BMC, Harris is able to create a new benchmark for delivering trust in the cloud. This means meeting or exceeding the top industry standards for security, performance and availability and deploying a sophisticated platform that would drive greater economies of scale and superior value at a competitive price. By meeting all these requirements BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management is a strategic component of Harris’ Trusted Enterprise Cloud.
