BMC Software: ‘New IBM zEnterprise Is the Logical Extension of Business Service Management’

  • BMC’s BSM platform enables easy transition to new zEnterprise hybrid computer
  • Solutions maximize hardware investment, provide cross-platform management of virtual and physical servers

HOUSTON, July 22, 2010 – The global leader in IT automation and management for the hybrid datacenter, BMC Software (NASDAQ: BMC) today announced support for the IBM (NYSE: IBM) zEnterprise, a new computer that will enable customers to consolidate their IT hardware investments, a critical and logical next step in the evolution of the hybrid datacenter of the future.

IBM’s next generation zEnterprise computer supports multiple operating systems -- z/OS, Power 7 AIX and Linux -- and is a milestone in the evolution of IT hardware, bringing mainframe and distributed systems together in a single frame.
With today’s announcement, BMC is once again providing customers a solution that fits their cross-enterprise software management needs. As the Business Service Management (BSM) market leader for more than 30 years, BMC has been providing cross-enterprise software solutions that help businesses manage their data centers. BMC continues to fulfill the needs to provision, manage and govern a combination of physical and virtual IT computing platforms and support IT workflows.
“IBM’s new zEnterprise computer represents the logical extension of Business Service Management principles to computer hardware,” said Bill Miller, president of BMC’s Mainframe Service Management business unit. “BMC designed our BSM platform to simplify and automate IT – whether that is a hybrid computer like the zEnterprise or a hybrid datacenter full of physical and virtual servers. We’re making it possible for our customers to realize the benefits of a unified BSM management platform for their mainframe, distributed, virtual and cloud environments. BMC’s customers are in a great position to gain a maximum return from their zEnterprise hardware investment for two reasons: It is aligned with the principles of Business Service Management, and our solutions are ready-made for it.”
IT organizations recognize they must move toward true end-to-end service management that allows them to support their business needs and away from the disparate management solutions that are being delivered by less strategic software vendors or by independent software vendors who do not include the mainframe in their software management strategy at all.
In a recent BMC survey, a majority of customers stated that it was very important to have a vendor that could manage the zEnterprise computer from a cross-platform perspective. Respondents said they saw the zEnterprise helping to consolidate their IT efforts and provide more reliable and faster networking and processing as well as lowering their MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) and providing more power and capacity to manage growing workloads. BMC’s BSM solutions, which are designed to reduce risks and improve availability and performance of the IT infrastructure, will enable customers to maximize benefits from the new hardware.
BMC helps many companies manage their IT infrastructures across the enterprise with its BSM platform.
“Running a 24 x 7 environment in order to deliver business services with finite resources means optimizing all your IT resources in a varied environment,” said KBC’s head of mainframe infrastructure, Kurt De Ronghé.  “At our company, we seek to deliver superior service and that all starts with integrated IT processes across the enterprise. By introducing BMC’s Business Service Management platform, KBC expects to increase performance and get more business value from a finite number of department resources. In fact, the bank estimates a combination of best practices and intelligent automation will save KBC €300,000 a year; representing a complete return on our investment in only six months.”
The innovation of the new zEnterprise platform combined with BMC’s BSM solutions offers companies a new level of convergence and consolidation in data center technology and processes – one that brings better performance and management to the operations that are vital to their business. BMC solutions continue to simplify and automate the hybrid computing environment for enterprises around the world and in various industries such as banking, insurance, transportation and telecommunications.
