U.S. Department of Defense Agencies Fortify I.T. Infrastructures with BMC Software

All U.S. Military Branches Adopt BMC’s Business Service Management as Critical “Force Multiplier” for IT Consolidation, ITIL Best Practices

HOUSTON, February 13, 2007 — U.S. Department of Defense agencies continue to select the power of BMC Software’s Business Service Management (BSM) in order to deliver a methodical, measurable, and actionable approach to implementing best practices outlined by the U.S. government’s Federal Enterprise Architecture (FEA), an IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL)-aligned initiative designed to enable agencies to rapidly and easily share mission-critical data.

U.S. Department of Defense agencies have selected BMC Software for approximately $8.5 million in new BSM contracts within the past six months.

“Many customers deploy BSM in a series of steps, resulting in a phased approach to the purchasing and implementation of BSM,” said Chris Aherne, managing director of Federal Sales and Operations, BMC Software.  “The recent selection of BMC’s BSM approach by U.S. Department of Defense agencies for their ITIL initiatives and FEA mandates is significant, further validating the applicability of BSM in the federal market.  As more federal agencies move forward with ITIL and FEA implementations, BMC is positioned to provide the right solutions in a phased approach to help ensure IT is bringing maximum value to the mission.”

In addition to recent selections by all four major branches of the U.S. military, other U.S. Department of Defense agencies that are using BMC Software solutions to achieve their broad strategic IT objectives include:

  • Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA)
  • Defense Logistics Agency (DLA)
  • Military Sealift Command (MSC)
  • Missile Defense Agency (MDA)
  • Members of U.S. Defense Intelligence Community

The implementation of BSM by multiple defense agencies highlights BMC Software’s leadership in IT infrastructure and service management software for the public sector and is also a milestone in the adoption of BSM, which offers an optimized IT infrastructure to serve highly complex government IT environments.

The specifications and goals for the FEA are supported by ITIL, the set of guidelines used for organizing and deploying major IT consolidation initiatives.  BMC Software’s BSM leads the industry with the most ITIL-aligned suite of IT infrastructure and service management solutions available in the market today.

“ITIL provides a framework of best practice approaches intended to facilitate delivery of high quality information technology services to an organization”, said Richard Ptak, principal analyst with Ptak, Noel & Associates.  “By implementing ITIL and ultimately Business Service Management capabilities, the Department of Defense should expect to be able to consolidate IT expenditures while increasing the agencies’ efficiency and return on investment.”

Defense agencies require IT solutions that deliver and ensure mission-critical agility, scalability and performance while remaining on budget.  Comprised of the pre-eminent air, land, and sea defense and intelligence organizations in the world, the U.S. Department of Defense also is at the forefront of peacekeeping, humanitarian aid and technology development and implementation.  With BMC Software and ITIL best practices, defense agencies are aligning their IT organizations and assets to directly support, assist, and complete agency missions and goals.

BSM integrates and automates ITIL best practices, and it is designed to leverage the BMC Atrium Configuration Management Database (CMDB) to increase sharing and accuracy of information across the federal agencies’ IT organizations, as mandated by the FEA.  Built on the federal government’s most widely deployed IT Service Management solution -- BMC Remedy -- BMC Software’s BSM approach helps federal agencies understand, meet and even anticipate their specific IT infrastructure needs.

“Improved IT service continuity and consolidation of IT infrastructures is critical for our defense customers. By integrating ITIL methodologies with Business Service Management solutions, BMC Software delivers automated functions, a shared data repository, unified service models, and reporting interfaces, all of which significantly improve operational efficiency for federal agencies,” Aherne added.

BMC solutions such as BMC Remedy IT Service Management, BMC Change and Configuration Management, BMC Application Management, BMC Identity Management, and BMC Service Level Management provide a superior level of scalability and the functionality required to support even the most complex IT infrastructures including massive data centers and legacy systems.  While minimizing network disruptions and prioritizing IT assets for mission-critical needs, they offer clear IT process efficiency and cost savings that are achievable quickly and economically.
