BMC Software Announces Support for New IBM eServer Mainframe

Company Leverages IBM Mainframe Capabilities to Facilitate On-Demand Computing

Editor's Summary:
BMC Software today announced:
  • Support of IBM's eServer zSeries 990.
  • BMC Software complements this z990 capability by providing cost-effective management solutions that allow customers to realize the business value resulting from higher levels of application and server consolidation.

Houston, TX – (May 13, 2003) – BMC Software, Inc., [NYSE: BMC], a leader in enterprise management, today announced enhancements to its enterprise management software designed to help customers exploit the unique capabilities of IBM's newest and most powerful mainframe computer. The IBM eServer zSeries 990 was introduced by IBM today as the "world's most sophisticated server," capable of helping customers grow their infrastructures and gain maximum value from their IT investments. Coupled with the new z990 servers, BMC Software service management solutions help make it possible for customers to ensure the right resources are made available to the right business services at the right time, allowing them to meet the challenges of emerging "On-Demand" computing environments.

The increased capacity found in the z990 combined with BMC Software's highly scalable server and workload management solutions enable customers to achieve higher degrees of server consolidation and to dynamically scale their IT environments to help satisfy both planned and unplanned business requirements. BMC's term and sub-capacity pricing models can accommodate these new On-Demand requirements, allowing customers to purchase what they need, when they need it.

In addition, the increased scalability and virtualization capabilities of the zSeries 990 are intended to give customers the option of hosting significantly more z/OS and/or hundreds more Linux systems on a single zSeries server. BMC Software complements this z990 capability by providing cost-effective management solutions that allow customers to realize the business value resulting from higher levels of application and server consolidation. zSeries 990 customers can also benefit from BMC's broad range of solutions that assist customers in predicting when, for example, additional Linux systems will be needed to support a business workload, and to provision and deploy those systems in a timely manner before business services are impacted.

"We are pleased that BMC is continuing its close working relationship with IBM and look forward to seeing the kind of support that BMC Software will provide," said Michel Martel, director, centralized systems for CGI, the fourth largest independent information technology services firm in North America. "By proactively managing our environment with BMC solutions, we are able to provide seamless, uninterrupted service to our customers. We are glad to see with this announcement that BMC Software is working to continuously enhance and improve its support of the zSeries and provide customers with the best in management solutions."

"With these new high capacity mainframe servers comes the need to manage higher volume, more diverse, and generally more complex workloads. BMC delivers highly scaleable solutions that allow these workloads to be managed to achieve customer-defined business service objectives," said Calvin Guidry, vice president and general manager, Enterprise Systems Management, BMC Software. "Companies now like never before must ensure that their business services are continuously available. BMC's support of the z990 offers customers the confidence that they can leverage the "On-Demand" capabilities of these new servers while maintaining full management control over them."

BMC Software has a long tradition of supporting and optimizing the IBM mainframe platform from System 370 through introduction of the zSeries. As an IBM business partner, BMC is committed to ensuring that its customers are able to optimize the investment they make in all IBM computing platforms. "IBM has enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with BMC Software," said Rich Lechner, vice president of Sales and Marketing, IBM Enterprise Servers. "We look forward to continued collaboration with BMC to provide our mutual customers with best-in-class hardware and management capabilities."

BMC Software will provide first-level support in June followed by enhanced versions of BMC Software products later this year that will exploit the capabilities of the new zSeries 990. The Company is a strong supporter of IBM's zSeries and will continue to help customers lower the cost of ownership and simplify management of their mainframe environments. Most recently, BMC Software introduced a new strategy and a new family of products called System Advisor designed to help simplify management of the mainframe, meet the needs of less-skilled workers in the market and address tight IT budgets. As part of the strategy, the company introduced System Explorer for z/OS, the first product in the System Advisor series. System Explorer for z/OS, the desktop of the future for the z/Series platform, helps simplify the complex mainframe environment by offering a Java-based graphical user interface (GUI) for the most commonly used interactive functions of z/OS. Addressing the diminishing skill set of mainframe programmers and technicians, System Explorer for z/OS further enhances return on investment in this mission-critical platform by helping increase productivity and reducing labor costs.

"BMC Software will continue to take the lead in systems management for the mainframe market and is committed to providing innovative solutions such as our new System Explorer for z/OS solution," said Guidry. "We look forward to the introduction of these next-generation zSeries servers and are committed to providing superior support for this platform."
