BMC Software Listed as a Leader in Job-Scheduling by Leading Research Firm

Scalable Architecture and Robust Functionality Contribute to Company's Leadership Position

HOUSTON - (March 17, 2003) - BMC Software, Inc., [NYSE: BMC], a leader in enterprise management, today announced that the world's leading research and advisory firm, Gartner, Inc. has listed BMC Software in the leader quadrant in Cross-Platform Job-Scheduling according to its recently released Magic Quadrant research note.1 The report evaluates vendors according to their vision of the technology and their ability to execute on that vision. For the second consecutive year, BMC Software's Business Integrated Scheduling solution, CONTROL-M®, is the only vendor to be listed in the Leaders Quadrant.

CONTROL-M provides advanced scheduling capabilities across the enterprise. It integrates batch processes running on diverse systems into a unified, manageable business process. Moreover, CONTROL-M offers a focal point of management, enabling efficient problem detection and resolution. Its innovative architecture helps organizations meet business goals by addressing reliability, availability and scalability requirements

"As a leading outsourcer we deal with a very demanding and changing workload -- we can't afford to have any downtime," said Shane Howlett, operations manager, Unisys West, a worldwide information technology services and solutions company that combines expertise in systems integration, outsourcing, infrastructure, server technology and consulting. "Our customers expect us to manage their business processes without any interruption. With CONTROL-M we can do so through integrating batch processes running on diverse systems. CONTROL-M provides us with efficient problem detection and resolution allowing us to provide our customers with the best service possible. The solution has given us the stability required in our job scheduling, enabling confidence in the delivery of service. In fact, we have a policy that whenever a new server is installed with a requirement for scheduling it must have CONTROL-M."

Gartner, Inc. determines leader quadrant positioning based on various factors that include breadth of platforms supported and the ability to integrate with business applications, to name a few.

"As Gartner cited in the report, the job scheduler market is changing, and to continue our leadership, BMC Software is changing with it. The unique architecture of CONTROL-M provides us with a solid foundation for adapting to these changes and BMC Software will leverage its job-scheduling leadership as the basis for enabling our customers to assure the highest level of service management," said Calvin Guidry, vice president and general manager, Enterprise Systems Management, BMC Software.

1The Magic Quadrant is copyrighted January, 2003 by Gartner, Inc. and is reused with permission, which permission should not be deemed to be an endorsement of any company or product depicted in the quadrant. The Magic Quadrant is Gartner, Inc.'s opinion and is an analytical representation of a marketplace at and for a specific time period. It measures vendors against Gartner defined criteria for a marketplace. The positioning of vendors within a Magic Quadrant is based on the complex interplay of many factors. Gartner does not advise enterprises to select only those firms in the "Leaders" quadrant. In some situations, firms in the Visionary, Challenger, or Niche Player quadrants may be the right matches for an enterprise's requirements. Well-informed vendor selection decisions should rely on more than a Magic Quadrant.
