HOUSTON - (April 29, 2003) - BMC Software, Inc. [NYSE: BMC], a leading provider of enterprise management, today expanded its infrastructure and application management leadership through advances in an Internet server product and additional networking solutions integration. The company announced a new version of PATROLî Internet Server Manager, adding automated problem identification and troubleshooting capabilities to its advanced application management tool. With these new capabilities, PATROL Internet Server Manager can proactively facilitate service restoration, monitor and manage a broader range of Internet services, and protect against domain name attacks and expiration.
PATROL Internet Server Manager (ISM) ensures that Internet and Intranet servers and Web-based applications are available and responsive by monitoring and managing local or remote servers, providing built-in expertise and automated administrative control without compromising security. With PATROL Internet Server Manager 6.1, BMC Software ensures even greater availability for mission-critical Internet applications through new Internet domain name management, automated root cause analysis and Web page component response time measurement. These capabilities help to quickly pinpoint and resolve server failures and to identify the cause of slow Web page response times. BMC Software has also added new port monitoring capabilities that monitor generic services, such as XML services, in combination with existing Internet protocols, all from a single product. With this addition, BMC Software is the first to monitor all major Internet Server types using a single solution.
According to one of BMC Software's large financial institution customers, "Managing today's complex eBusiness IT environments requires greater automation, and with the built-in intelligence of BMC Software's solutions we can anticipate problems with our Web site and proactively resolve them before they affect our customers. "With PATROL Internet Server Manager, we can not only monitor server failures but also manage them to ensure Internet sites run efficiently 24 hours a day. This will result in a higher return on our business investment, and an increased level of customer service."
PATROL ISM is part of BMC Software's application management solutions designed to optimize the availability and performance of business applications and ensure data accuracy through proactive management and process automation across integrated systems. It is a proven solution that manages all the major Internet protocols from one product in both centralized and decentralized operations. The new version of PATROL ISM is designed to automate standard troubleshooting processes to point administrators to the root cause of Internet server problems, therefore allowing them to reduce IT costs, simplify IT complexity and improve the services they provide. The new capabilities include:
- Root Cause Analysis - Automated root cause analysis helps Web administrators quickly resolve problems and get failing servers back online by pinpointing the most likely cause of failures. By adding these capabilities, BMC Software is continuing its leadership in applying built-in intelligence to automate common trouble-shooting tasks, helping customers to resolve problems quicker. In addition, PATROL ISM's root cause analysis capabilities expand BMC Software's service management efforts by complementing the service-oriented correlation capabilities in other BMC Software solutions.
- Web Page Component Response Time Capabilities - PATROL ISM retrieves all web page elements to approximate response times experienced by real users with component breakdown into time required for images, text and client applications. This information can be used to identify specific elements that are under performing and causing page response time to increase.
- Port Monitor - With the addition of new port monitoring capabilities, PATROL ISM can monitor more Internet applications than any other solution. Port monitoring enables PATROL ISM to communicate with custom-built and packaged applications that reside on TCP/IP ports that are not monitored by other applications. Administrators can perform simple port pings inside and outside the firewall to make sure that a service is available or that transactions like sending a mail message or checking an XML service are responsive and returning the right content.
- Internet Domain Name Management - If an Internet domain name is compromised by an attacker or expires, a company's vital Internet presence and business reputation can be permanently damaged. PATROL ISM now gives advanced warning when a domain is close to expiring, while offering the ability to verify the content of the domain record to quickly alert administrators to any unauthorized changes to the domain.
"To maximize the potential of their Internet business components, BMC's customers need to be assured that their Web servers and applications are available and functioning, and they need a comprehensive tool that can manage this infrastructure for them," said Calvin Guidry, vice president and general manager, Enterprise Systems Management, BMC Software. "By combining the powerful automation capabilities of PATROL Internet Server Manager with a single view across the silos of IT, BMC Software provides a business perspective to IT management that enables companies to better manage their IT organizations."
The new version of PATROL ISM is being demonstrated at this week's Networld+Interop (N+I) conference in Las Vegas, NV, in support of BMC Software's Application-Centric Network Management (ACNM) initiative. ACNM assures business availability by managing the network from an application perspective, providing integration between BMC Software's networking solutions and the company's extensive application, server and database solutions. The ACNM solution includes PATROLî Visualis, a graphical modeling tool that provides a quick and intuitive view of the entire network and the resulting data flows, and PATROLî DashBoard, a network and application performance reporting tool that provides two-dimensional reports on information gathered from infrastructure devices such as routers, LAN switches, probes and their physical and logical interfaces. At N+I, BMC Software is also demonstrating further integration of network information into its broader enterprise management solutions with:
- PATROL Visualis and PATROL Enterprise Manager integration that exploits PATROL Visualis' new fault management capabilities to enable customers to visualize network elements and related flows and fault management information from a single event format; and
- PATROL Dashboard and PATROL End-to-End Response Timer (PETERT) integration provides customers with the ability to determine root cause analysis of response time degradation or failure of a business transaction. PETERT monitors end-to-end response time of business transactions and PATROL DashBoard correlates PETERT response time data by comparing it to every network metric it is collecting. As a result, PATROL is able to show probable root cause analysis and will determine if the network is the cause of the response time degradation or transaction failure and if so, where in the network the problem is occurring. The ability to determine where in the network the problem has originated is a key differentiator of BMC's PATROL solution.
Pricing and Availability
The new version of PATROL Internet Server Manager is now available. The solution starts at $1,995 per work group server.
