HOUSTON - (February 10, 2003) - BMC Software, Inc. [NYSE: BMC], a leading provider of enterprise management, today announced it has enhanced its deep management of mission-critical servers with the release of PATROL for Microsoft Windows Servers 3.0 and PATROL for Unix 9.0. These releases include improved workflow and out-of-the-box functionality that allows customers to proactively manage their servers, which is a prerequisite for a company to achieve optimum service management. PATROL for Unix and PATROL for Microsoft Windows Servers' comprehensive operating system management capabilities help ensure systems are available to end-users and protect the continuity of the business services those systems support. Serving as the foundation of BMC Software's full range of management solutions, PATROL for Unix and PATROL for Microsoft Windows Servers reduce the complexity of the IT environment by providing management by exception with visual and audible alerts that automatically notify IT staff about critical events before a service is impacted.

BMC Software Windows Management Delivers Broadest and Deepest Capabilities
BMC Software offers extensive management solutions for the Windows environment, including monitoring and management through predictive capabilities that enable Windows administrators to proactively manage their environment. The new release provides an improved Windows "look and feel" that enables customers to exploit the graphical capabilities of the Microsoft Windows operating system. This release complements BMC Software's broad and deep solution set for Microsoft across the entire enterprise and further enhances its ability to manage the increasing variety of applications deployed in Microsoft environments. PATROL for Microsoft Windows Servers also offers new capabilities, allowing users to monitor any application in their environment with just a few configuration steps.

"Our goal at The City of Dallas is to minimize business risk across our IT infrastructure and managing our Windows environment is a critical step in making sure this happens," said Dan McFarland, chief information officer, City of Dallas. "We have to simplify and proactively manage performance information in business terms. Using PATROL for Microsoft Windows Servers enables us to cost-effectively manage our server environment and is one of the first steps we take to providing service management."

New Capabilities Enable IT to Focus on Proactive Management
PATROL for Unix and PATROL for Microsoft Windows Servers solutions help reduce costs by improving IT staff productivity through automatic detection and resolution of operating system problems, enabling IT staff to focus on more strategic initiatives. These new releases offer improved workflow of tasks and performance of data collection, helping customers to minimize the complexity of their environments. Other new features include pre-configured parameter settings for streamlined installation, enhanced log and process management capabilities and new event filtering capabilities that enable administrators to easily set up event notification through paging and e-mail.

"Proactively managing our servers is critical to achieving customer satisfaction and differentiating us from our competitors," said Noahal Mundt, senior architect, Service Management Automation for Corio Inc., a leading enterprise application service provider, who BETA tested the PATROL for Unix solution. "With PATROL for Unix, we are able to manage our environment more efficiently and effectively. With BMC PATROL we can make the best use of our IT resources and provide proactive alerts, corrective actions and notification to maintain business availability for our customers."

"BMC Software enhanced server management solutions help customers more effectively automate monitoring and management of their important server environments," said Dave Anderson, director, PATROL Platforms Management, BMC Software. "Through efficient monitoring and management of their servers, administrators can then move forward to the next level of management with performance and prediction capabilities. This helps them to better understand the past, present and future performance of their IT environment which allows them to deliver the right levels of service exactly when they are required by their business."

The new PATROL for Microsoft Windows Servers and PATROL for Unix releases leverage the recently introduced PATROL Central Operator consoles designed to increase automation and extend ease of use of the technology. PATROL Central Operator - Microsoft Windows Edition, one of the consoles recently introduced, complements other BMC Software Windows solutions by delivering access to IT management information in a format that looks and feels like Microsoft applications, increasing a customer's return on investment in their PATROL environment by providing a familiar Windows interface incorporating drag and drop capabilities that enable users to easily design navigation message panes, toolbars and other elements.
