BMC Software Delivers Performance Management Solutions Across the Enterprise

New Versions of Perceive Enable Customers to Better Link and Manage IT Change with Business Demands

HOUSTON (Dec. 9, 2003) - BMC Software, Inc., [NYSE: BMC], a leader in enterprise management, today introduced several new solutions in its Enterprise Performance Assurance (EPA) product family to further extend the company's performance management capabilities across the enterprise. By broadening its performance solutions across more platforms and deepening the application data available to business users, BMC Software enables customers to confidently deploy the right resources at the right time to meet ever-changing business demands while continuously assuring the cost-effective and consistent performance of their business services and infrastructure - regardless of platform.

BMC Software is introducing MAINVIEW Perceive and PATROL for iSeries - Perceive, Web-based data access solutions that provide IT performance views directly to business stakeholders. In addition, BMC Software has added support within PATROL Perceive for enterprise applications, including Oracle e-Business Suite, Siebel, WebSphere and SAP R/3, across the EPA family.

"Performance Assurance is important to our company and one of the key reasons why we chose BMC Software's Perceive solution," said Boris Gdalevich, capacity manager, Quest Diagnostics. "Perceive provides us with quick and actionable data, allowing us to make strategic decisions within minutes and not hours. This provides us with a better return on our investment. With BMC Software's Performance Assurance solutions we are better positioned to know when changing resource demands will adversely impact our ability to deliver acceptable service before it happens. It is our goal to provide proactive service management and working with BMC Software enables us to do just that."

By extending the EPA solution with MAINVIEW Perceive and PATROL for iSeries - Perceive, BMC Software now offers a single, customizable Web view for viewing and analyzing performance data across Windows, UNIX, Linux, mainframe and iSeries servers. That consolidated view enables customers to centralize diverse performance data, turning it into a holistic view of enterprise performance. Customers are able to quickly and easily tie together performance information with other important enterprise information such as configuration and assets, business performance and other time-series information to more closely link IT and business performance. Along with expanding the breadth of platforms BMC Software supports with PATROL Perceive, the company is adding its application expertise to ensure that customers can optimize the applications that drive their business. The addition of support for Oracle e-Business Suite, Siebel, WebSphere and SAP R/3 enterprise applications further speeds the quick time-to-value of Perceive by adding these critical business applications into the view "out-of-the-box". This view enables customers to understand application resource usage.

"Through the workload concept employed in EPA solutions, companies can combine or build processes into a workload, enabling analysis and optimization of the services those workloads support," said David Wagner, director, product management, Enterprise Performance Assurance at BMC Software. "With the addition of several new server operating systems and enterprise applications, Perceive brings together more of BMC Software's performance data, creating a powerful tool for customers to optimize their IT operations."

Enterprise Performance Assurance and Business Service Management
Enterprise Performance Assurance offers management and analysis tools that enable companies to better understand and manage the performance of their IT infrastructure and the business services that execute across the infrastructure. BMC Software's EPA solutions play an important role in BMC Software's Business Service Management (BSM) strategy, which enables customers to change the way they do business - to begin managing IT from a business perspective. To support the effort of managing IT from a business perspective, PATROL Perceive enables customers to customize views in order to look at metrics that make sense for a company's business.

One of the benefits of BSM is a better understanding of the performance impact of business or IT change; capabilities delivered by BMC Software's Performance Assurance solutions. The Performance Assurance solutions gather performance data on historic and current performance usage and generate business-oriented baselines. Business change scenarios (growth, consolidation, etc.) can be factored into the overall performance analysis, ensuring high-confidence that the results will not only resolve today's performance problems, but will cost-effectively scale as a company's business grows.
