BMC Software Unveils Business Service Management Strategy

Enables Customers to Better Link IT Priorities and Resources with Their Company's Overall Business Objectives

BMC Software today announced:

  • A new strategic direction focused on Business Service Management (BSM) that will enable customers to link their IT resources and management solutions with the goals and priorities of their overall business;
  • A strategy that will enable companies to move beyond traditional IT management and manage their business critical services from both an IT and business perspective.

HOUSTON - (April 7, 2003) - BMC Software, Inc., [NYSE: BMC], a leader in enterprise management, today announced a new strategic direction focused on Business Service Management (BSM), the direct linkage of IT resources and management solutions with the goals of the overall business. The objective of BMC Software's BSM strategy is to enable companies to move beyond traditional IT management and manage their business critical services from both an IT and business perspective. The intent of the BSM strategy is to provide solutions that will enable customers to link their IT resources tightly to business objectives and manage these resources based on business priorities by providing a "whole view" of their business and IT operations.

"In today's challenging economic climate, tightly linking IT infrastructure with key services and business goals has become increasingly more critical to UCB," said Anne Bellemans, service delivery manager of UCB, a leading pharmaceutical company headquartered in Belgium, with labs, sales and production centers around the world. "As a Remedy and MasterCell customer, our IT direction aligns very nicely with BMC's Business Service Management strategy. We're successfully integrating our MasterCell and Remedy solutions to form a strong foundation for BSM and will continue to work with these tools to fully leverage the benefits of this strategy."

In today's environment, IT and business are inseparable. However, most IT management solutions do not support this critical linkage. Through BSM, BMC Software is unveiling a plan for integrating all of its management disciplines into a cohesive strategy that allows IT to be managed from a business perspective. BMC Software has built its BSM strategy around three essential components: Service Impact Management, IT Service and Applications Management and IT Operations and Infrastructure Management.

"Our BSM strategy was developed on the fundamental belief that in today's business environment there are no IT projects, only business projects supported by technology," said Bob Beauchamp, president and CEO, BMC Software. "We have been laying the foundation for our BSM strategy for some time, acquiring Remedy and IT Masters as well as developing major internal projects such as Project Golden Gate1 and powerful enhancements to PATROL, to provide significant BSM solutions today. Over the next months and years ahead, we will be delivering robust components to our BSM strategy along with a roadmap that shows customers a concise plan for where we are going and how they can begin to implement BSM today."

Building the Foundation for Achieving BSM
BMC Software's long-standing heritage in providing enterprise management solutions for data, infrastructure, application, performance and service management are key to its IT Operations and Infrastructure Management component of the BSM strategy. By providing customers with the ability to monitor and control the key components in their IT infrastructure, including systems, databases, applications, storage and networks, companies can begin to tie service-level agreements to business needs, rather than technology metrics.

The Company added an important element to its portfolio when it completed its acquisition of Remedy late last year. Integration of Remedy's industry-leading service desk, change management and asset management capabilities with BMC Software's broad application and component management solutions enable the Company to deliver end-to-end, closed-loop service management to customers. Together, these solutions build a solid foundation for the IT Service and Applications Management component of the BSM strategy by offering both the delivery and support components of service management that ensure proactive and effective management that focuses on customer business requirements.

To fulfill the promise of BSM, it remains necessary to directly link business services to the underlying technology. The recent acquisition of IT Masters enables BMC Software to deliver upon the Service Impact Management component of its BSM strategy and provides the Company with a competitive advantage in the service management market. The MasterCell technology combines powerful event automation and service modeling capabilities to transform availability and performance data into detailed knowledge about the status of business services and service level agreements. BMC Software's comprehensive enterprise and service management solutions, combined with MasterCell's IT service modeling and management capabilities, enable customers to manage their business using a truly integrated service impact management approach.

The BSM strategy will continue to evolve over the next several years, with supporting announcements to begin in the following months. In addition to new solutions that support its strategy, the Company will continue to expand partnerships to deliver on its BSM strategy.
