BMC Software Completes Acquisition of Perform, SA

Acquisition Strengthens PATROLĀ® Solution and Provides Customers Competitive Edge Combining Network and Application Management

HOUSTON - (Feb 28, 2001) - BMC Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:BMCS), the leader in e-business systems management, today completed its acquisition of Perform, SA, a French Web-based network optimization software developer. The acquisition will extend BMC Software's market leading ability to provide true end-to-end Service Level Management from an application services perspective.

"We look forward to working with BMC as they incorporate network performance into their application management solutions," said Jim Turner, Director of Marketing, Enterprise Line of Business at Cisco Systems. "Perform's Dashboard product currently integrates with the CiscoWorks2000 product family, and we believe Cisco's customers will benefit from BMC's continued efforts in this area."

BMC Software will offer two products from the Perform acquisition. PATROL Dashboard will be available immediately starting at $10,000 while PATROL Visualis™ will be available within 30 days with pricing beginning at approximately $40,000.

As a result of the acquisition, BMC Software is adding a PATROL Network Management Line of Business to its extended line of PATROL solutions. While a formal product roadmap is forthcoming in April, BMC Software will initially be integrating Dashboard and Visualis with PATROL solutions, in the following four technology areas with a delivery timeframe scheduled in April.

1. Extending PATROL with Network Information
BMC Software's first priority will be to share network performance data with PATROL applications. Utilizing the network information found in Perform's products, BMC Software solutions like PATROL for Service Level Management and PATROL for Internet Services will be able to better understand network connectivity and view the health of the entire enterprise. Through this integration, PATROL will mine data from Perform applications -- DashBoard and Visualis -- and store that data within the PATROL storage facility. This integration will allow both PATROL applications as well as partner applications to access the network data using the same access method that they currently use to access PATROL data today.

2. Bringing PATROL Performance Information into the Network
BMC Software's PATROL will provide IT with a patent-pending topological view of their infrastructure which includes the application and network resources and how they are interconnected. Through this integration, customers can observe and replay over time network traffic flows across the infrastructure between application components. During the first phase of integration between Perform's products and

BMC Software's PATROL solutions, the ability to discover PATROL agents and Knowledge Modules™ will be added to Perform's Visualis product. From a single view within Visualis, a user will be able to view network traffic between workstations and servers throughout the network. Users will then be able to visualize just how an application affects the network and how the network affects an application.

3. Using PATROL to Diagnose Network Problems
PATROL for Diagnostic Management is a family of solutions that determines root causes of a problem in an application while Perform's product Visualis discovers IP and physical layer topology within the network. BMC Software will be integrating these two products so that PATROL for Diagnostic Management will have the ability to diagnose application failures and determine if the failures were caused by application or network errors and identify precisely where those errors occurred in the network.

4. Passing Events from DashBoard to PATROL
Many customers today use PATROL Enterprise Manager as the primary access to their enterprise management. BMC Software will work to pass alerts and congested events from Dashboard to PATROL Enterprise Manager. This integration will allow users to use PATROL Enterprise Manager's tools to correlate network errors within the enterprise.

"With the addition of this new technology, BMC Software will provide application-centric network management, which will allow our customers to determine the business impact of network performance on their company's bottom line," said Andy Burger, vice president and general manager of PATROL Network Management, BMC Software. "Now BMC's customers can take full advantage of PATROL's ability to manage the network as well as the entire technology stack, fully managing mission critical applications."
