Solutions projected to increase IT productivity by 60 percent

HOUSTON, September 29, 2010 – The Airline Tariff Publishing Co. (ATPCO) relies on mainframe solutions from BMC Software (NASDAQ: BMC) to manage billions of pieces of information needed to calculate airline ticket sales and cargo fees for more than 460 airlines worldwide.

ATPCO is the airfare data provider for more than 460 airlines worldwide, which represent 97 percent of scheduled commercial air travel, and also provides information for travel agencies, cargo carriers, governments and industry organizations. Every day, the company collects millions of updates to fares and rules, which are submitted online and in batches that often contain up to 500,000 transactions.

To maintain and manage its huge volumes of data, ATPCO relies on BMC’s CHANGE MANAGER for DB2 and CATALOG MANAGER for DB2 solutions to keep databases synchronized across four DB2 test environments, to ensure integrity of the information and ultimately reduce mainframe costs. Automating on the BMC mainframe solutions is projected to increase productivity nearly 60 percent. ATPCO used to manage the databases manually.

“The process was nightmarish before,” said Wayne Arrington, data architect at ATPCO. “We had a modeling tool, but the comparison process with that tool could take a day or more. With BMC CHANGE MANAGER for DB2, we can do the job in minutes.”

BMC’s CHANGE MANAGER for DB2 solution enables ATPCO to efficiently implement DB2 structure changes across environments, clone databases into other environments and automate release management. With CHANGE MANAGER for DB2, ATPCO can complete structure changes 7.5 times faster and drop and create new objects 30 times faster than the manual processes. Structure comparisons are done 120 times faster. Prior to implementation, staff had to create complex scripts to unload data, drop objects, rebuild and reload data, which could negatively affect application performance.

With BMC’s CATALOG MANAGER for DB2 solution, ATPCO database administrators use a single tool to perform all DB2 management functions. It is so easy to use that developers and production support staffers are able to navigate the DB2 catalog without knowledge of the catalog structure.

“By eliminating the manual processes, we’ve increased quality and efficiency,” said Dave Pichosky, manager of data architecture at ATPCO. “We’ve also made it easier for people throughout the organization to view catalog objects, including members of our data architecture, database administration, development, production support and operations groups.”
