CUSTOMER WIN: BMC Software Helps J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. ‘Deliver the Goods’ for Customers
HOUSTON, December 22, 2009 – J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc., one of the largest transportation logistics companies in North America, relentlessly pursues improvements that will lower costs and add greater quality for customers. However, when it came to ensuring continuous improvement to its IT service delivery, the shipping giant found itself at an impasse.
The primary issues were declining support from its IT vendor at the time and the rising cost of maintaining decade-old legacy DB2 management tools. Confronting these issues put J.B. Hunt on a new path that led to BMC Software (NASDAQ: BMC) and its BMC Control-M family of workload automation solutions that control batch and enterprise applications across both mainframe and distributed environments.
“We kept putting off replacing our tools because there are always risks involved with a major switch of this magnitude,” said Virginia Carron, J.B. Hunt’s IT manager. “BMC Software gave us greater visibility into our overall schedules and tighter integration of our batch schedules across our mainframe and distributed systems. We absolutely need this so that we can make sound business decisions and keep cargo moving.”
J.B. Hunt now relies on BMC for an enterprise-wide view of a complex batch environment that spans mainframe and distributed servers and multiple operating systems, including z/OS, Microsoft Windows and UNIX. Batch jobs run across this mixed environment for fleet management, warehouse operations, billing, payroll, human resources and other critical applications. Batch jobs also play a major role in moving operational data from critical systems into the company’s data warehouse, which provides accurate up-to-date business intelligence on all aspects of truck movements and deliveries.
Underlying J.B. Hunt’s business-critical systems is its IBM DB2 database, which BMC solutions support with comprehensive functionality for organizing and maintaining DB2 tables and ensuring high performance.
BMC SQL Performance for DB2 helps J.B. Hunt’s database administrators pinpoint poor performing SQL statements so they can improve response times. BMC Database Administration for DB2 increases application availability and optimizes resources by reducing the time needed to administer multiple DB2 environments. BMC Database Advisor for Family DB2 z/OS provides maximum database performance and application availability. According to Carron, using BMC database management utilities has reduced their CPU utilization allowing J.B. Hunt to increase productivity and reduce costs.
Whether it’s reducing empty miles run between shipments hauled or calculating the most direct path from origin to destination, J.B. Hunt is using sophisticated IT systems backed by BMC Software to identify the most efficient shipping methods to deliver its business services.
