The San Francisco Grand Prix of Cycling
Presented By BMC Software

THE SAN FRANCISCO GRAND PRIX 2001 presented by BMC Software will bring multi-time Tour de France winner, Lance Armstrong, his U.S. Postal Service team and an international field of over 120 of the world’s best professional cyclists to the streets of San Francisco for the ultimate test of man and machine. This year’s event marks the third year in a five-year agreement BMC Software signed with USA Cycling, the national governing body for the sport of cycling, to sponsor the Grand Prix series. The San Francisco event is the third stop of this year’s BMC Software Grand Prix series.

Course Description
This 125-mile road race starts and finishes on the Embarcadero at the end of Market Street, near the city’s famous Ferry Building in San Francisco. From The Start/Finish, the course winds through North Beach, along Fisherman’s Wharf and the Marina. Halfway through the 10-mile circuit, the flatlands along the beautiful bay give way to the gut-busting climb up Fillmore Street. Once the riders reach the top of the steep 3-block climb; they will race through Russian Hill, back through North Beach and to the Embarcadero.

This event will be televised live on KGO/ABC-TV, approximately 5 hours of live coverage. In addition the event will have a preview and wrap up television program. The Grand Prix will be one of the largest events on the North American racing calendar.

Saturday September 8th, 2001
San Rafael Cycling Women’s Classic presented by BMC Software. Historic downtown San Rafael 's tree-lined streets and vibrant shopping district offer a challenging course for the racers, while easy access to the venue and plentiful amenities attract thousands of spectators. Imagine a warm, sunny Saturday afternoon in late summer, watching the race action on the front straightaway from the sidewalk patio of the Broken Drum Brewery during lunch--ideal, yes? An all-day Expo will be held on Fourth Street adjacent to the racecourse, and a free public children’s race will be held during the lunch break. Come out and cheer on over 80 of the top professional women cyclists as they race for 30-miles on a 1.5 mile circuit through downtown San Rafael. The Great San Francisco Bike Ride organized by the Bicycle Coalition in association with SF Grand Prix. Hit the streets of San Francisco!! Starting at 7:00am join your fellow cycling enthusiasts in the unique opportunity to ride along the course free from traffic. You’ll get a taste of what these professional cyclists are up against as you cruise through the 5-mile short course before the race even begins. Take this chance to enjoy a great family fun ride or just have the streets to yourself, your friends and your bikes for a full hour. Proceeds will go to benefit San Francisco Bicycle Coalition’s Co-Exist campaign to promote safer streets for bikes and cars. The BMC Software Corporate Team Challenge. Titans of industry will have the opportunity to team up and battle it out in a relay race along the 10-mile Grand Prix race circuit. There will be three relay points around the course. The 10 teams, consisting of 4 members each, will designate a rider to a specific part of the course based upon the strengths needed during each relay leg. Shortly after the official Grand Prix begins, the first 10 riders will take to the course and speed to the first exchange point to pass the next leg on to his/her teammate as they race to the finish line.

Lifestyle Expo. The 2001 Lifestyle Expo opens at 9:00am on the Embarcadero. Located across from the Ferry Building, close to the Start/Finish, visitors can enjoy a variety of merchants, concessions and entertainment.
