BMC Software Delivers IT Discovery Suite

Company Ships Topology Discovery, Completes Three-tier Discovery Offering that Enables Companies to More Accurately Understand and Manage their IT Environment

SUNNYVALE, Calif - (December 7, 2004) - BMC Software (NYSE: BMC - News) today announced the availability of it's patent-pending technology, Topology Discovery, the third component of the company's business-aware discovery and detection solutions in its Change and Configuration Management (CCM) offering. Topology Discovery provides IT managers with visibility into complex dependencies between applications and the underlying infrastructure -from the PC to the mainframe - to optimize business availability and speed up problem resolution processes.

Topology Discovery is an agent-less solution that uses native communications protocols to rapidly discover the elements within enterprise application infrastructures, along with their logical and physical dependencies. This level of automated discovery is critical for successful asset, change and service impact management, and provides IT managers with insight into operations that will enable faster response times, improved service levels, and greater return on their infrastructure investments.

BMC Software's IT Discovery suite, which includes Topology Discovery, is part of the company's Change and Configuration Management (CCM) solutions, which include business-aware discovery and detection, process-based change management, and policy-based configuration automation. The solutions provide customers with a sliding scale of automated tools to address the hurdles companies face in being able to more quickly and easily respond to changing business requirements, including a lack of standardized processes and best practices for managing IT change. BMC Software shipped the first two discovery solutions, Discovery Express and Marimba Configuration Discovery from BMC Software, in October. Together, the three discovery solutions automate the discovery processes that enable service delivery and support processes defined Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) guidelines. ITIL provides a documented, systematic, and structured method of service management that assists in aligning IT and business strategies, increasing return on investment and reducing costs.

Topology Discovery Expedites Business/IT Alignment
Topology Discovery plays an important role in enabling companies to achieve Business Service Management (BSM), BMC Software's strategy of aligning IT and business goals, by providing the ability to rapidly discover what physical and logical elements (servers, routers, switches, databases, gateways, web servers, application servers) and dependencies comprise an application infrastructure (SAP, J2EE). Topology Discovery automatically builds and maintains the network maps and application infrastructure dependencies needed by BMC Service Impact Manager, the company's service modeling and policy engine. Topology Discovery facilitates the creation and maintenance of the service model by not only discovering the components and relationships of enterprise application infrastructures but also watching for changes and proposing updates to the service models accordingly.

With Topology Discovery, BMC Software is delivering the industry's deepest capability through three levels of discovery, Network, Application Expert and Generic:

  • Network discovery delivers real Layer 2 discovery that maps all the physical components (routers, switches, servers, load balancers, firewalls, desktops) and their physical connections.
  • Application Expert discovery delivers an accurate discovery technique that relies on BMC Software's broad application expertise to discover application environments and their relationships. Today, BMC Software offers expert discovery of SAP and J2EE environments. For example, Topology Discovery uses native communications protocols to discover all the components of an SAP application (Gateway, Database, Application Servers, Web Servers, and SAP modules and applications), and to map the relationships for all these components.
  • Generic discovery uses a set of sophisticated algorithms to determine application dependencies and identify distributed applications deployed in the IT environment. This technique discovers unknown elements in the IT environment by recognizing well-known footprints based on communications patterns and application signatures. Generic discovery incorporates important IT components such as homegrown applications.

According to a recent Forrester report, BMC Software has successfully broadened its portfolio, in particular by Marimba for software distribution and additional change and configuration management, and is focusing entirely on BSM. Forrester believes that BMC currently has the strongest overall strategy of the four large established players in the overall infrastructure management space.1

"With Topology Discovery, BMC Software is harvesting the wealth of information the company has gained in its 11 years of application and system management to deliver a solution that will change the way organizations view and manage their IT environment," said Mary Nugent, vice president and general manager, Service Management Solutions, at BMC Software. "BMC Software is one of the market leaders in managing home-grown applications with PATROL, and pulling these applications, along with everything else in the IT environment automatically into Topology Discovery, empowers companies to drive IT operations and change processes to gain dramatic improvements."

Complete Discovery Suite Facilitates ITIL Processes
BMC Software's IT Discovery Suite works at three levels of the IT environment, including the asset level, configuration level, and relationship level.

Discovery Express works at the asset level and implements an agent-less technology that rapidly finds all desktops, servers, and network devices connected to the network. This asset data enables IT managers and network administrators to quickly determine hardware and software inventory positions, reduce end-user support costs, and expedite problem resolution to improve service levels and customer satisfaction, all goals prescribed by the ITIL processes of problem management, change management and incident management.

Marimba Configuration Discovery works at the configuration level and provides more detailed and comprehensive management of endpoints. Marimba Configuration Discovery builds on the inventory lists returned by Discovery Express, allowing users to identify devices requiring further management and to place agents on those devices in order to manage and maintain their hardware and software configurations. These capabilities meet ITIL's goals for release management and configuration management by providing the IT manager with control over all the IT components upon which a business service depends.

With the availability of Topology Discovery, BMC Software delivers a third level of discovery, the application infrastructure relationship level. With this breadth of discovery, companies discover relationship data between assets and configurations and manage and maintain the relationships required to deliver a business service, a goal further prescribed by the ITIL configuration management process.

"Marimba Configuration Discovery from BMC Software has been a key component in managing our software content in Select Comfort's highly distributed infrastructure," said Rick Larson, director of IT Services for Select Comfort. "Comprehensive discovery ensures we have updated, reliable information about the state of our users and it is a critical enabler for the ongoing automated management of our software configurations. We use it every day."
