BMC Software® Simplifies the Management of Complex Database Environments with Integration of IMS Databases into SmartDBA® Console HOUSTON - (Sept. 27, 2004) - BMC Software, Inc. [NYSE: BMC], a leader in enterprise management, today announced the integration of IMS databases into its SmartDBA console. With the introduction of SmartDBA System Administration for IMS, BMC Software is further distinguishing itself from the competition as the only vendor that offers the ability to manage all major databases (IMS, DB2 Universal Database for mainframe and distributed platforms, Oracle, Sybase and SQL Server) from one Web-based console. In doing so, BMC Software is addressing the IT challenge of managing increasingly complex environments by providing a closed-loop process for proactively identifying, preventing and resolving database problems before they affect the business. "A growing issue for mainframe enterprises is the decline in skilled staff to maintain the environment. With the majority of Fortune 1000 companies operating on a mainframe, companies need to look to technology to compensate for diminishing mainframe skills," said Bill Miller, vice president and general manager, Mainframe Management, BMC Software. "BMC is the only company that can provide customers with heterogeneous management across mainframe and distributed database environments. In doing so, we are eliminating the complexities traditionally associated with managing the mainframe by enabling cross training and skill sharing so that any DBA, regardless of their database knowledge, can easily work in a mixed environment." Today's announcement marks another significant milestone in BMC Software's previously announced (Oct. 2002) blueprint for lowering the cost of managing data across the enterprise. The goal of this initiative is to provide deeper levels of interoperability and integration between management tools for mainframe and distributed database management systems by bridging them with the company's SmartDBA Web-based console and technologies. In doing so, BMC Software is reducing the need for companies to have "experts" for each database by extending DBA skill-sets across multiple databases. "Our database environment is extremely complex and growing. If there is a DBMS out there - Sybase, IMS, DB2, Oracle - we are using it. To complicate matters we are being asked to support more with fewer resources," said Todd Blandford, senior DBA, Duke University Medical Center. "A standard 'console' that manages all of our DBMSs would facilitate cross-training and enable us to better leverage our resources." With the introduction of SmartDBA System Administration for IMS, BMC Software is extending the advanced functionality it delivers for managing the performance, administration and recovery of IMS databases to the SmartDBA console. SmartDBA for System Administration for IMS provides customers with an integrated solution for all of their IMS administration tasks. Additional performance and recovery solutions for IMS databases will be integrated into the SmartDBA console later this year and in 2005. These solutions include:
