EMC Named BMC Software Business Service Management Foundation Partner for Storage

Completes Phase 1 Integration of EMC ControlCenter with BMC Software PATROL®, Enabling Customers to More Closely Link Storage with Business Processes

New York - (October 15, 2003) - EMC Corporation today announced that it has been named the Foundation Partner for storage as part of BMC Software's Business Service Management (BSM) initiative. As a Foundation Partner, EMC is working with BMC Software to tightly integrate the EMC ControlCenter family of open storage management software with BMC Software's enterprise management solutions to provide customers with comprehensive, end-to-end management from a business perspective.

EMC and BMC Software also announced that they have completed Phase 1 integration, enabling ControlCenter to send storage-specific events (e.g. capacity, performance and device availability warnings) to BMC Software's PATROL® Enterprise Manager. Through Phase 1 integration, PATROL users are now presented with a single, active view of their IT infrastructure, including status alerts of the storage environment. This integration improves the availability of critical business processes by speeding root cause analysis. Future integration will enable ControlCenter customers to leverage PATROL's application awareness, giving storage administrators a broader and more granular view of the entire IT environment.

Moving forward, the companies will provide additional integration of ControlCenter and the IT Service Management (ITSM) suite from Remedy®, a BMC Software company, and BMC® Service Impact Manager to extend the association of storage assets with business processes. From this integration, customers will gain streamlined trouble ticketing processes, additional automation of storage provisioning capabilities, and improved productivity of storage management staff.

Mark Lewis, EMC's Executive Vice President of Open Software Operations, said, "Today's announcement highlights the range of strategic and technical synergies that EMC and BMC Software bring forth for our mutual customers. Integration between ControlCenter and BMC's BSM solutions opens up an entirely new business-focused view of their information infrastructures. Our work as a Foundation Partner reflects the combined strength of EMC and BMC Software in helping customers make their IT operations -- and their information -- more cost effective and more productive for the business."

Mary Smars, Vice President and General Manager of the Enterprise Systems Management Business Unit at BMC Software, said, "Storage plays an increasingly critical role in enabling business services. As a BSM Foundation Partner, EMC strengthens BSM by integrating storage-related events, assets, and automation with other information technology management solutions. Through this integration, the impact to business or storage-related events or alerts is realized immediately, resulting in improved business performance, along with reduced cost and IT resource complexity."

Today's announcement builds on the global sales, marketing and technology partnership announced by EMC and BMC Software this July, when EMC acquired rights to BMC Software's PATROL Storage Manager software, and BMC Software announced that it will resell EMC's ControlCenter family of products as its exclusive distributed systems storage resource management offering.
