Data Management Highlights
BMC Software continues to aggressively build upon its data management portfolio for the distributed and mainframe environments, providing database administrators (DBAs) with solutions that address their administration, performance, and recovery needs for optimal performance of the entire database infrastructure. During 2002, BMC Software outlined its blueprint for lowering the cost of managing data across the enterprise. The goal of its initiative is to provide deeper levels of interoperability and integration between management tools for mainframe and distributed database management systems (DBMSs) by bridging them with the Company's SmartDBA Web-based console and technologies.
BMC Software continues to set the standard for the database management facilities market. By providing intelligent, automated data management tools that have a common look and feel across all database platforms, BMC Software is reducing data management costs by eliminating the need for databases to be offline and for companies to have "experts" for each database. Additional highlights of 2002 include:
- significant new enhancements that extend the capabilities of BMC Software's SmartDBA family of Web-based management solutions that detect, diagnose, and correct database performance issues and provide a common interface to DB2® UDB, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL Server databases;
- the integration of BMC Software's industry leading backup and recovery tool, SQL-BackTrack, with its SmartDBA Web-based console to create the industry's first comprehensive, fully integrated data management solution; and
- new second-generation DB2 V7 mainframe solutions and DB2 Universal Database (UDB) solutions running on Unix and NT platforms, featuring tighter levels of integration and new built-in intelligence features and the initial integration of BMC Software's DB2 UDB offerings with its SmartDBA console.

Performance Management Highlights
BMC Software continues to set the standard for performance management by aggressively developing and providing solutions that increase customers infrastructure, application and service management capabilities, helping customers to proactively manage their resources and meet their demanding service level agreements. Over the past year, BMC Software has introduced new solutions both for the distributed and mainframe markets to improve customer's return on investment (ROI) and provide cost savings to IT.
Leveraging its distributed management solution PATROL®, BMC Software introduced an innovative approach to enterprise management, the sliding scale of management, which matches infrastructure monitoring and management products to customers' needs. Since not all systems require the same level of management, IT departments can reduce costs and increase ROI by choosing the right tools for each system. Utilizing the PATROL family of solutions, customers are able to choose from light-weight entry level monitoring to advanced proactive management with solutions that seamlessly integrate through one centralized Web-based interface. Additional highlights of 2002 include:
- adding new fault management capabilities to PATROL Visualis Fault Manager, BMC Software's advanced graphical network performance modeling tool. With these new capabilities, PATROL Visualis sets a new standard in network management as the first graphical solution to combine network discovery and network traffic flows modeling with fault management, dramatically improving problem resolution;
- enhanced its deep management of mission-critical servers with the release of PATROL for Microsoft Windows Servers 3.0 and PATROL for Unix 9.0. These releases include improved workflow and out-of-the-box functionality that allows customers to proactively manage their servers, which is a prerequisite for a company to achieve optimum service management;
- a new Enterprise Performance Assurance initiative which delivers performance and prediction analysis tools that enable companies to better understand and manage the performance of their IT infrastructure. As part of this initiative, BMC Software introduced new distributed solutions and a roadmap for future mainframe solutions;
- PATROL Express, a new entry-level application monitoring solution that delivers agent-less monitoring, reducing the cost of deployment and change management for the enterprise;
- continued delivery of integrated, easy-to-use and cost effective solutions from BMC Software's mainframe product line, MAINVIEW®, which monitors, manages, automates and optimizes z/OS and OS/390 applications and resources; and
- new Linux solutions designed to ease the deployment of the critical Linux environment.
