BMC Software Drives Down the Cost of Managing IMS Databases Increases DBA Productivity and Improves Utilization of System Resources with Introduction of MAXMÒ Database Advisor HOUSTON - (July 8, 2003) - BMC Software, Inc. (NYSE: BMC), a leading provider of enterprise management, today announced MAXM Database Advisor for IMS, a new enterprise data management solution that drives down the costs associated with managing IMS databases by increasing database administrator (DBA) productivity and availability of business data. The new solution supports Project Golden Gate by helping customers better utilize their DBA resources, enabling them to focus on tasks that are more critical to the business. Providing customers with the ability to access this solution through a flexible, easy-to-use Windows-based interface (based on the SmartDBA console), further simplifies a DBA's job. "As a seasoned DBA with more than 15 years of experience, a solution like MAXM Database Advisor is very welcome and much needed," said Gunnar Lindberg, IMS system programmer for TietoEnator, one of the leading suppliers of high value-added IT services in Europe. "Previously, we had been unable to find a vendor that could meet our complex reorg needs. With this solution however, we will be able to leverage features such as automated analysis and proactive notification to conduct reorgs only when needed. Additionally, the solutions simple installation and user-friendly graphic interface make it appealing to even our younger DBAs as there is only a minimal learning curve involved." MAXM Database Advisor for IMS is the first product of its kind that proactively advises customers of their reorganization needs, enabling DBAs to conserve data management resources by eliminating "guess work" and unnecessary maintenance. By automating many of the day-to-day maintenance processes and avoiding unnecessary reorgs, valuable DBA resources can be dedicated to more critical tasks such as strategic planning and database design. "With database environments becoming increasingly more complex and DBA resources more scarce, the need for better management solutions becomes more critical," said Nancy Dixon, director, mainframe product management, Enterprise Data Management Division of BMC Software. "With solutions like MAXM Database Advisor that feature built-in intelligence and easy-to-use features, we are making it possible for less experienced DBAs to manage legacy IMS environments while freeing up more experienced DBAs to focus on issues that are strategic to the business." MAXM Database Advisor for IMS proactively and automatically manages space usage for full-function and high-availability large database (HALDB) environments within and across IMS and z/OS SYSPLEXs. The solution's built-in intelligence uses database performance and space metrics to identify and predict database problems. MAXM Database Advisor also forecasts when problems will occur and recommends the best available solution to solve or prevent the problems. The solution lets the DBA select the database problems to prevent, choose from the recommended solutions and submit or schedule a job to prevent the problems. This proactive notification gives the DBA advance warning so that required database maintenance can be planned and scheduled in such a way as to have minimal impact on existing service level agreements. For additional optimization of resources and improved availability of data, MAXM Database Advisor dynamically determines if scheduled reorganizations are necessary. The job proceeds only if the analysis determines that the reorganization is necessary thus providing substantial savings by avoiding unnecessary processing. BMC Software's SmartDBA data management solutions play a central role in Business Service Management. SmartDBA products intelligently and proactively manage enterprise data, so customers can achieve high data availability levels at a low cost. The addition of MAXM Database Advisor for IMS to BMC Software's portfolio of data management solutions will further enhance the ability to identify problems before they impact the business, and resolve them in the order of their business priority.
