What Is ITIL?

ITIL® is a set of IT service management practices that focuses on aligning IT services with the needs of business. ITIL stands for “Information Technology Infrastructure Library” and is recognized globally as the leading framework for IT service management (ITSM).

The ITIL framework helps IT groups manage the delivery, industrialization, support, and consumerization of any service or product from inception to retirement. Adoption of this framework can be the foundation for success of initiatives such as DevOps, cybersecurity, cyber-resilience, Internet of Things (IoT), and other emerging trends and technologies.

ITIL is not a set of required standards, rather it provides practical, strategic guidance for IT services management. Any organization with a product or service that also has an ITSM roadmap can benefit from this framework. It is not just technology management or process management but IT service management with a focus on improving the capabilities of people, processes, and technology.

ITIL also complements other industry best practices. For instance, an organization can augment the framework with project management best practices.

There are five stages of ITIL. Each stage in this service lifecycle supports all the other stages.

  3. Service Transition
  4. Service Operation
  5. Continual Service Improvement
