BMC Software releases Atrium Discovery and Dependency Mapping version 9.0

I’m excited to announce that BMC Software has released BMC Atrium Discovery and Dependency Mapping version 9.0.  There are lots of new goodies in this release!  But the feature I’m most excited about is the new SNMP recognition rule UI that enables you to create recognition rules for unrecognized sysObjectIDs.

With SNMP recognition rules, users can implement basic discovery for SNMP devices like UPSs, managed PDUs, KVM switches, etc., and for network switches and routers not yet officially supported through our monthly Technology Knowledge Updates (TKU).

The cool thing is that in many cases full discovery of the SNMP device (including ports and the link between the switch and the server) can be achieved because BMC Atrium Discovery is smart enough to try an existing MIB based on the information defined in the recognition rule.

All devices discovered in this way are created as CIs in the Atrium CMDB, and therefore available to support ITIL processes just like any other CI.  Customers are very excited about the new SNMP recognition rules capability, and I spoke with a US energy company using this feature to discover security cameras at their facility.  Now that’s clever!

Other key enhancements in our 9.0 release:

  • A 15 to 30 percent improvement in system performance
  • Support for the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 encryption standard
  • Faster execution of common administration tasks such as adding new disks and backing up the appliance
  • Perform discovery over IPv6

There’s a lot more in this release!  Read the data sheet for a quick summary of what’s new, or for a full list, check out our online documentation.

A quick note about IPv6:  I highly recommend you read our IPv6 Beginner’s Guide.  This guide was written by one of our superstar developers and includes a wealth of information, plus links to other helpful resources.
