U.S. Government Agencies Choose BMC Software's Business Service Management (BSM) Strategy

  • BSM Supports ITIL® initiatives, Federal Enterprise Architecture
  • ITIL®, IT Consolidation, and Security Noted as Drivers of BSM Adoption
  • BMC Software Aligns IT With the Business to Lead In Business Service Management, writes Independent Research Firm(1)

HOUSTON, June 6, 2007 – Adding to its recent success with the U.S. Department of Defense, BMC Software today announced that a number of U.S. government civilian agencies are also adopting Business Service Management (BSM) to automate their IT operations and align their IT resources tightly to their mission requirements.

Civilian agencies have selected BMC Software for approximately $15 million in new BSM contracts in recent months.  Agencies relying on BMC’s BSM solutions to help achieve their strategic IT objectives include:

  • Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
  • Environmental Protection Agency
  • Federal Aviation Administration
  • NASA Shared Service Center
  • United States Postal Service
  • US Department of Veterans Affairs

BMC’s BSM approach helps these civilian agencies align with and implement best practices, like the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL®), and comply with federal directives including the Federal Enterprise Architecture (FEA).

“ITIL, in conjunction with consolidation and security, are prominent trends in the public sector as a whole and civilian agencies are especially looking to industry best practices like ITIL to make sure that information is secure and processes are efficient to better serve and protect the general public,” said Chris Aherne, managing director, Federal Sales and Operation, BMC Software. “The FEA, A-76 requirements, and a presidential expectation for efficiency, security, and information sharing are shaping government IT purchasing decisions.  Federal agencies are turning to solutions that lead the market and can perform in large, fast-paced, high-security, service-oriented environments.”

Aligned directly with ITIL and built on BMC Remedy -- the federal government’s most widely deployed IT Service Management solution -- BMC’s BSM approach is designed to leverage the BMC Atrium Configuration Management Database (CMDB) to increase the sharing and accuracy of information across federal agencies’ IT organizations, as mandated by the FEA.

In a March 2007 Forrester report entitled, The IT Management Software Market, Thomas Mendel and JP Garbani write, “The…quest to improve productivity and the predictability of IT results has led to the creation of BSM and the CMDB as the two central pillars of the new wave of IT management software tools.”2 In a separate Wave report, BMC was noted as being a leader in the BSM market, earning the highest score for current offering and one of the highest scores for strategy.”3

Government agencies require IT solutions that can help them be agile, scale, and deliver timely information to U.S. citizens while remaining on budget.  With BMC Software and ITIL best practices, civilian agencies are aligning their IT organizations and assets to directly support, assist, and complete agency missions and goals.

BMC solutions such as BMC Remedy IT Service Management, BMC Change and Configuration Management, BMC Application Management, BMC Identity Management, and BMC Service Level Management provide a superior level of scalability and the functionality required to support even the most complex IT infrastructures including massive data centers and legacy systems.  While minimizing network disruptions and prioritizing IT assets for mission-critical needs, they offer clear IT process efficiency and cost savings that are achievable quickly and economically.
