BSM and BMC Asset Management

A standalone Asset Management tool sees IT assets primarily as components. You can usually see what software is installed on a device, but you can’t see what business processes the asset is supporting, or how are the assets inter-related to each other.

Companies that implement BSM using a Configuration Management Database (CMDB) can develop rich relationship information with BMC Asset Management to support a variety of operational processes. The benefits include:

  • Asset Manager can make better decisions, whether for sourcing or chargebacks, by knowing what business services an asset participates in, and who is consuming those business services
  • Since BMC Asset Management uses the same Configuration Item record as the operational processes, it provides foundation for automating and enforcing IT Asset Management policies
  • Service Desk can utilize the asset information for better issue resolution, example it can help avoid spending internal technical resources when asset is under external maintenance or warranty contract

In short, BMC Asset Management integrated with CMDB ensures assets are not viewed as standalone entities but as business service elements.
