Commitment to Accessibility and Section 508
The BMC Software vision is to deliver accessible and usable products by ensuring that the intent and spirit of the Section 508 law (www.section508.gov) is an intrinsic part of the product development life cycle.
The Section 508 law requires U.S. federal agencies to procure and use products, involving Information Technology (IT), that afford federal employees with disabilities comparable access to technology as their non-disabled counterparts. Along with various U.S. state and international standards, the Section 508 technical requirements address the needs of individuals with disabilities including those with visual, hearing, mobility, and cognitive impairments.
BMC Software has established an internal Accessibility Program to address the requirements and ensure their viability within the development process. The overarching structure of the program is comprised of the following elements to drive product conformance:
- Operations: including overall program operations and day-to-day processes
- Investigation: investigating customer needs to identify program focus
- Integration: incorporating accessibility into the BMC Software development process
- Training: including awareness and technical training
- Information: generating and cataloging of internal technical solutions, policies, and procedures
- Outreach: participating on government committees, standards overview, and public relations
- Evaluation: instituting an internal feedback mechanism and determination of the program’s impact
- Improvement: determining and implementing program enhancements
